    3. Hi John Thank you for posting that wonderfully helpful and detailed description of the parish of Mathon and its changes. However West Malvern was actually transferred to the Worcestershire Registration County in 1897 - the Registration District of Upton on Servern, later known as Malvern. Before that it was in Bromyard RD, along with Mathon and Cradley. Full details can be found under the lists of RDs on GENUKI Kind regards Polly who spent 3 years helping to index all the registers in the Bromyard Register Office! ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Sands" <ejohnsands@yahoo.co.uk> To: <eng-worcester@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 05, 2010 10:04 AM Subject: [WOR] JAMES EAGLES David As to the Civil Parish: the Worcestershire part of Mathon, now known as West Malvern, forms a parish on the west side of the Malvern Hills. Mathon was formerly partly in Worcestershire and partly in Herefordshire and most of the original parish is now the parish of Mathon Rural in Herefordshire. By a Local Government Board Order of 1894 the parish was divided into two parts, Mathon Urban and Mathon Rural, the former comprising the part in Malvern Link urban district. By Local Government Board Order of 8 May 1897, confirmed by the Provisional Orders Confirmation (No. 10) Act, 1897, Mathon Rural was transferred to Herefordshire. By the Malvern Link Extension Act of 1896, which came into operation 31 March 1897, part of Cradley was transferred to Mathon Urban, and the whole was renamed the civil parish of West Malvern. West Malvern is still in the registration county of Hereford. It was constituted an ecclesiastical parish out of Mathon and Leigh in 1844, but is in the Diocese of Worcester whereas Mathon ecclesiastical parish is now in the Diocese of Hereford. Not having done any research in the area I am not sure, but it may be that you need to look in the Census etc for Herefordshire rather than Worcestershire. I live in Cradley, the adjoining village, and would be happy to take photos etc if that helps. I have Googled Free Paddock (as I don't know where it is) and came up with the following at www.curiousfox.com/history/worcestershire_24.html EAGLES FAMILY - Mathon Are shown as living at Free Paddock, Mathon in the 1881 census, William, Elizabeth, Clive, Ann, William, Sarah and Jessica. William is shown as being a Butcher. Any information as to location of property or shop plus length of time living there would be appreciated. Perhaps this is your own entry, but if not it's a contact for you. Mathon has a church and village hall but the school is long since converted to a house, there are no shops and although technically the pub (Cliffe Arms) is still a pub (the council won't give planning permission for change of use) it hasn't opened its doors for several years. John PS I have just seen your entry on www.mathon.org.uk/forum/family-history/free-paddock-mathon which has enabled me to find Virginia Cottages on the map. They are just on the Herefordshire side of the boundary so will be in Mathon. He was recorded living at Free Paddock in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses. William EAGLES died in 1895 but Elizabeth and James are not recorded in other Censuses and there does not appear to be any other information as to their whereabouts or eventual demise. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. David Lindsell 58, South View Gardens, Andover, Hampshire.
