Hi Peter, Different lists have had views taken and gone their own way, I believe. Actually, you can choose yourself how your reply works. I use Thunderbird 3.0.5 and I have icons to select: Reply, Reply to List, Reply All. If you don't want to to use Thunderbird, use the Reply All setting that should be on most email client programs. Training the Newbies would be a problem possibly. Depending on what other replies you get might I suggest you write to the list Admin, and ask if something can be added to the Successfully Subscribed message, which I think can be altered.
