Hi, I'm seeking records concerning Edward ETHERIDGE and his wife Elizabeth who had a son, Edward Robert, born in about 1832 please? We believe he came to NSW in 1854 but would like some details of his family in England if possible. Many thanks, Jan in sunny Queensland

Hello Stuart If you use the search engine at http://www.genuki.org.uk/contents/#Search to look for Stockton you will see that there are 14 places in England with that name. If you search FreeBMD for the birth of a James Price in Dec 1849-Dec1850 you will get a list of all the entries from the various Registration Districts. If you then click each district name in turn, then the "information can be found about it here" link, you will be able to check whether that RD includes a place named Stockton. I suggest you check these out first, to try to narrow down the one you want. Let me know how you get on, and I'll try to help further. I am seeking information on my grandfather, James Price, and ggrandfather, Joseph Price. James was born Oct 1849 from the 1900 Census of Columbia County, Wisconsin or Oct 17, 1850 from his death certificate. On the 1882 marriage record his father is listed as Joseph. The space for his mother is blank. Thanks to the help others have provided I have a copy of his declaration of intention to become a US citizen. This told me he arrived in Baltimore on Apr 11, 1872 and was a "native of Stockton, England". Looking at the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Census reports of England and the Free BMD index, I have found five possible birth records. Liverpool, Vol. 20, p. 432; Wrexham, Vol 27, p. 298; two in Worcester, Vol 18, pp 560 and 588; Gloucestershire, Clifton, Vol. 11, p. 308. I do not want to order all 5 records. Does anyone on the list have access to any of these records so they could check to see if 1) Is the father's name Joseph and 2) Is the date of birth Oct 1849 or Oct 1850? Or any other places to search? Thanks for any help. Stuart Price

Hello list My first post to this list so I suppose I ought to introduce myself. I'm Dick Mathews, living in Essex. I've no ancestors from Worcestershire as far as I know, but my wife's father Albert Knight came from Badsey (as did generations of Knights before him) and Albert's maternal line - Clarke / Shearman / Tomlins / Hawker - also is entirely within the county. My puzzle is that a chap named Philip Tomlins (c. Severn Stoke 27/01/1802) married a widow Mary Pates (formerly Hawker) in 1824 and the family appeared to have settled in Hanley Castle, where several children were christened. Their last child was born at Eckington (Mary's home parish) on 28 Sep 1838. Philip was sentenced to be transported for seven years at the Worcester Assize held on 22 Feb 1838, and doesn't appear in the 1841 census. Mary was buried at Eckington on 17/02/1844, and on 13/07/1845 Philip married Caroline Langley at Hanley Castle. I do wonder whether Philip actually left England - I don't think it's likely that in the space of seven and a third years he would have made the journey to Australia, served a full term (in order to gain an absolute pardon) and sailed back to England. Could anyone with local knowledge (or access to the Worcester Record Office, if I'm very lucky1)throw any light on this? Dick Mathews
Re: November meeting of the Worcester Branch of the Birmingham & Midland Society for Genealogy & Heraldry We regret to advise you that Mrs Christine Seal, the speaker scheduled for our November 13th meeting, will be unable to attend due to ill health. We hope to include her talk on "Domestic Servants in the 19th Century" at one of our meetings in 2010. In place of the talk we will participate in a genealogical exercise evening. Some members will remember we held a similar meeting a few months back and it proved to be most enjoyable. The meeting will as usual be at The Baptist Church Hall, Sansome Walk, Worcester, starting at 7.30 pm. The alteration to our programme is unavoidable but we nevertheless apologies to those who were looking forward to the planned talk. Arthur Lewis

Worcester Branch BMSGH The next meeting of the Worcester Branch of the Birmingham & Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry will be on Friday, 13th November 2009. Our speaker will be Mrs. Christine Seal who will give a talk entitled: "Domestic servants in the 19th century" This topic will surely be of interest to most of those researching their family history. Were any of your ancestors employed as domestic servants? Probably so, given that the number of women employed in indoor domestic service reached a peak of 2 million in the early 1890s, which was 1 in 3 of all girls between the age of 15 and 20. Mrs Seal is a graduate of the Open University, with social and economic history of the 19th century as her main subject. She has a BA (Hons) from the OU and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Birmingham in modern history, investigating domestic servants in the 19th century. Peter Taylor will again be manning our Bookstall and Lending Library. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available. The small charge also buys you a ticket in our raffle and helps to cover some of our expenses. Visitors are welcome to attend the meeting which will be at The Baptist Church Hall, Sansome Walk, Worcester, starting at 7.30 pm. Entrance fee: Members - free; non-members £2 Arthur Lewis
Hi Folks, There are several occasions where PINFIELD enters my tree. To this end I am trying to construct a mini tree, or trees, to see how the are related. I think I have exhausted what I can extract from the Census, Births, Marriages and Deaths at the moment. Please does anyone have a transcription of ANY PINFIELD will produced from say 1720 to 1840 they could let me have. Any other information on PINFIELD, relative to another family or point in time, between 1720 and 1840 would also prove useful. Naturally I will share what I learn with anyone who can help. Hi Joy, Whether or not this will help I don't know, but there were 2 pairs of Thomas & Martha STOKESes baptising in Lindridge... a] 1793 Oct 21 - William 1796 May 1 - Mary Ann [as STOKE] b] 1816 Dec 29 - Charles 1819 Mar 1 - James There was evidently a small colony of STOKESes in the village - although they don't seem to've baptised their children there - who were busily marrying: 1771 Jul 16 - Jacob STOKES & Ann CHILD 1772 Jan 14 - Joseph STOKES & Mary STOKES [cousins???] 1800 Sep 29 - John MORRIS & Mary STOKES 1809 Dec 11 - Thomas STOKES & Martha DAVIS The last couple *look* to be the parents of Charles & James - but it also looks very much as if they moved away from the area after the marriage as a 7-year gap between marriage and 1st child seems excessive. [Unless Thomas was a soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, being dismissed after Waterloo...] I think you may have to see the Registers to see what additional information is given as to Thomas' occupation in 1816 & 1819 - and his marital status or otherwise when he got married. But whether or not it's the right Charles is another thing altogether:-) Remember me to Lucy..... Hi Listers I've been researching my three STOKES lines in WOR for several years. It turned out to be a confusing exercise, but rather less so after Gus suggested a way of distinguishing between the lines. (Thanks again, Gus!) However, I can't place my 2GGF, Charles, b 1816, to my satisfaction. His marriage cert gives Thomas, a grocer, as his father. I can't find him in 1841 and by 1851 he says he is b Malvern and is living in Leigh Sinton with his wife and his first two sons. Starting again from scratch and using IGI as a jumping off point, I find just one Charles, father Thomas, b 1816 - but in Lindridge, which is about 25 miles from Malvern, if you're a crow. How likely is this? A Thomas married Martha DAVIS in Lindridge in 1809, but I feel that I'm in the realms of fantasy here!! I realise that since I began my research new resources have burgeoned, as has the number of new researchers. Is anyone researching STOKES in WOR? Or has anyone a good idea as to where I can look next, please? I estimate Thomas's d/o/b as c1785. Kind regards Joy also researching in WOR - NOTT, WOODWARD, JONES, EVANS, LINTON, STEPHENS, YARNOLD and many more.
Thank you to everyone who sent me information regarding Powick Asylum. There was a lot of useful informtion in the replies. Whilst I have not found the asylum in all of the censuses, I have found my Gt Gt Grandmother there in 1861 and her initials against a likely occupation and other conforming details in 1881. If someone could possibly recommend a researcher in Worcester that I could employ who could look up her details in the archives, I would be most grateful. I live on a rock in the middle of the Atlantic and have great difficulty in carrying out research personally in the UK now! Thanks again to all Dennis
