I am unsure as to precisely what you mean, since the marriage you have already spotted appears to be the only one at FreeBMD in, as you say, the Sep quarter of 1923, vol 6d page 383. FreeBMD has only two entries for a Dorothy Mabel Catchpole, one at Newmarket in the Sep quarter of 1892 (3b 514) and another at Wells in the Sep quarter of 1895 (5c 471). Neither of these registration districts are in Worcestershire. There is only ONE entry for a possible Philpotts, which is Arthur Victor Philpotts at Hereford in the Sep quarter of 1887 (6a 484). Why don't you buy the marriage certificate from the GRO website and if you're not certain you have the right one you can always put checking references which means you get some of your money back if it doesn't fit? I can find only one Dorothy Mabel Catchpole in the 1911 census, who was the one born in 1895 and she was a domestic servant at Glastonbury (which I believe is in the Wells RD). There is also only one Arthur Victor Philpotts, who was the one born in Hereford RD but in 1911 living with family at Solihull. Restrictions in my subscription agreement with Findmypast preclude me from sending you any other details but you can look them up for yourself. Why not take it from there? It would seem to me that you have a much better chance by researching the official records, rather than vaguely hoping someone on the list might have these people among their ancestors. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dennis Flavell To: BRITISHHOMECHILDREN@rootsweb.com Cc: Chesterfield Sent: Thursday, January 21, 2010 4:03 PM Subject: May FLAVELL born 1881 Adoption My grandfather's sister May FLAVELL born 1881 Walsall, Staffs. was according to Family Lore, "Adopted" and taken to Canada after her mother died soon after childbirth in 1881. Over the years I've searched and searched for 'May' under our Family name without success. I know that official adoption in the UK didn't come about until 1926/27. Were there any, does anyone know of, any 'unofficial' Adoption Lists or Data that exists for that time, say 1881 to about the 1890's. I've not even managed to find which Orphanage / Workhouse that my grandfather Benjamin Job FLAVELL and probably his sister May FLAVELL, were placed in from c the month of May 1881. (between the 81 and 91 Census). My grandfather re-joined his newly re-married father in Derbyshire (Clay Cross area) by the 1891 Census.(In 1881 Census he was lodging along with his father and mother at their ONIONS relations just outside of Nottingham. The 'unofficial' adoption could have taken place anywhere; Canada, USA, England (Walsall-Sedgley-Dudley- Worcestershire-Nottinghamshire - Derbyshire for example). Regards Dennis FLAVELL

    3. Hi Dave The first thing that I would do is to order one of the birth certificates of the two children born after the start of Civil Registration (1st Jul 1837). This will then give you the mother's maiden name and then you will at least know when you have found the correct marriage. It may well be one of the three that you have found in GLS, but you have to remember that the IGI is very far from complete There are marriage indexes for both WOR and HEF (another possibility) so you would need to check those too. It's a pity that you are not looking for a marriage of a James & Elizabeth CALDWELL, because I have one of those on my ROWBERRY tree at Bishops Frome HEF in 1831, and I don't know what happened to them afterwards! The two births appear in the GRO index as: 1838 Jun CALLWELL Edward Martley 18 403 1842 Mar CALWELL George Martley 18 441 and you can order then with that information and a credit card payment of £7 from this website: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ HTH Polly ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Potter" <david.potter93@tesco.net> To: <ENG-WORCESTER@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 16, 2010 9:29 PM Subject: [WOR] Colwell/Calwell/Calder/Colder/Caldwell Please can anyone assist with my research? By 1911 they were living and working at 21 High Street, Evesham, where Edwin was a Wheelwright and also a Cycle Agent. I would also love to know whether Edwin and Elizabeth appear in any monumental inscription index for St. Lawrence's Church, Evesham. Edwin died in 1913 and Elizabeth in 1917. 3. Good morning Brian, I'm certain I've seen the Oakes surname in my guff but I cant find it at the mo. Below, I'll give you what I have. I have noted down that your Elizabeth Hinton chr. 4 Jan 1791 at Ribbesford is the daughter of John and Mary Hinton. As I couldn't see an immediate tie, I didn't note down an earlier marriage of these last two. In my lot, my family history is likely to be: 24 July 1781 Edward Hinton marr. Sarah Allin at Kidd', 2 Oct 1782 William Hinton chr. son of Edward and Sarah at Kidd', 22 Jan 1787 Elizabeth Weaver chr. dau. of Joseph and Hannah Weaver at Kidd', 8 Feb 1808 William Hinton marr. Elizabeth Weaver at Kidd', 4 Apr 1819 Elizabeth Hinton chr. dau. of William, a shoemaker and Elizabeth Hinton at Ribbesford. A related 1841 census is (my comments are in brackets): Tontine Row, Stourport. Silvia Taylor, 50, Yes (nee Weaver, marr John Taylor 20 Apr 1820 Kidd'); Elizabeth Hinton, 20, Yes (age 22yrs); John Hinton 4, Yes (Elizabeth's son probably). Another 1841 census: 373 Coal's Quay, Bewdley. William Hinton, 55, shoemaker, Yes (Elizabeth's father); Edwin Hinton, 15, tailor, Yes (Elizabeth's brother Edward ?). Another 1841 census: Load St, Bewdley. William Hinton, 25, tailor, Yes (Elizabeth's brother); Mary Ann Hinton, 25 (nee Humpherson?); Emily Hinton, 7 months (chr. 27 Dec 1840 Ribb). The 1881 census High St, Stourport: John Hinton, H, 44, Chemist, born Bewdley; Fanny Hinton, W, 44 (nee Ransom Simons); William R. son, 14, born Stourport; Harry E. son, 12, born Stourport; Amy M. dau, 10, born Stourport; Guy C. son, 4, born Stourport. As I said above, the comments in brackets are mine. If this is of any relevance, I hope you can untangle it. Richard. -----Original Message----- Subject: [WOR] Elizabeth HINTONs Richard Poole, I was exceedingly interested to read your reply to David Potter about your gggmother, Elizabeth Hinton, chr Ribbesford 4 Apr 1819. I couldn't find any children for them. The Hintons were tailors and shoe makers from Bewdley. From the 1861 census, Thomas and Sylvia Caswell had the Hope and Anchor Inn in New St, Stourport.
