    1. [WOR] Weaver and Tomlins
    2. RPOOLE
    3. Thankyou Graham (and agree) with the reasons for placing surnames in the subject line, rather than the annoying school mistress approach. The search archives are a valuable source. I have Weaver and Tomlins (plural) in my lot, but haven't found any living ones from this line, nor know little past. My Martha Tomlins married Frederick William Bathurst Poole Dec qtr 1840 at Madeley. The Ironbridge 'Museum of the Gorge' on the edge of the Severn was 'Tomlins Garage' about 100yrs ago. ---- Also, my gggggparents Elizabeth Weaver and William Hinton are on IGI, as marrying 8 Feb 1808 at Kidderminster, WOR (probably St.Marys CoE church). -------The following is a paragraph from page 91 of the Worcestershire 'Hunt End Book' - "Stourport-on-Severn" by Anne Bradford. I hope Anne wont mind. ------"MILL ROAD. Mill Road, leads of course, to the old site of Mitton Mill. The residents of Mill Road may not know that the one-time Mayor of Philadelphia, city and port of USA, came from their midst (ie. Stourport, Worcestershire). John Weaver was the fourth son of Benjamin Weaver who lived in Mill Road. His first employment was as an office boy at Wilden Iron Works, then he became a clerk in the office of the Severn & Canal Carrying Company. He came to Philadelphia, tried several jobs but wasn't satisfied until he went to work in a lawyer's office. He taught himself shorthand and typing so that he could improve his position, then he decided he wanted to be a fully-fledged lawyer and he studied in evening classes for five years until he was qualified. Although John Weaver was quiet and unassuming he was a man of steel. In a city which was notorious for its bribery, corruption, betting and gambling, John Weaver stood out as an honest, straightforward Christian and he was eventually elected as mayor. One year, he went on holiday in the Rockies and the council took the opportunity of his absence to authorise the sale of the town's gas works which would bring in a large revenue but increase the cost of gas to the townsfolk. Weavers' friends sent him a telegram to let him know what was going on, he rushed back and caught his colleagues unawares. Another time he managed to quell a riot of about a thousand black workers single-handedly. The townsfolk hailed him as a hero." Richard Poole, NZ.

    3. Meeting of the Worcester Branch of the BMSGH The next meeting of the Worcester Branch of the Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry will be on Friday, November 12th, 2010 at 7.30pm. Due to unforeseen circumstances the original speaker is unable to attend. Our Secretary, Christine, has been busy and succeeded in arranging a new talk on "Saucy Worcester and its wonderful women" to be given by Barbara Jenkins. A well-attended meeting would be the best way of showing our appreciation to Mrs. Jenkins for stepping in at short notice. Peter Taylor will again be manning our Lending Library. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available. The small charge also buys you a ticket in our raffle and helps to cover some of our expenses. The meeting will take place at the Baptist Church Hall in Sansome Walk, Worcester. Members can attend for free and there is a £2 entrance fee for non-members, who are welcome to attend. Further details can be found at www.worcesterbmsgh.co.uk. Arthur Lewis

    3. Hi Peter and John When I read this, I thought, I am sure I have had things pop up on IGI on Family Search which weren't on Hugh Wallis's IGI, but immediately put it to the back of my mind, mainly because I couldn't think of an instance. I know what I have below is not Worcestershire but it shows that the two records do not tie up completely and perhaps a search of both sites should be carried out. I was sent this christening today with regard to one of my husband's relations.   It is the extracted christening of a Catharine Gowar in Seal, Kent 12th August 1812 and I went on to IGI to check to see if I could find any siblings and found that the records for baptisms in Seal, Kent on IGI are only from 1561 to 1599.   However, I then went on to family search to see what if anything they had and if so to see what clicking on the batch number found.   This baptism was there and it was an extracted record with a batch number.  Regards Eveline ________________________________ From: Peter Booth <pbo08596@bigpond.net.au> To: ENG-WORCESTER-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, 4 November, 2010 23:04:33 Subject: Re: [WOR] Pre 1837 records John,     I don't know where you found the data about the family of William & Mary Richardson as nothing comes up on IGI.  Indeed, a look at Hugh Wallis shows the only IGI batches for Lower Mitton end at 1700.     That suggests the data may be held locally.     My only suggestion is to go back to the source where you found the 1808 birth on Elizabeth Richardson at Lower Mitton and check if they have deaths and marriages.     Peter ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-WORCESTER-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [WOR] Pre 1837 records
    2. John Richardson
    3. Hello the list, I have been searching many years for an ELIZABETH RICHARDSON. Born in Lower Mitton on 28 January 1808, one of 5 siblings to WILLIAM and MARY RICHARDSON (no marriage on Worcester marriage list pre 1837). I have found no trace of her after that entry. The IGI shows an ELIZABETH RICHARDSON marrying a RICHARD NUTHER, in Great Comberton in 1826. I do not think this is the Elizabeth from Worcester as there was/were Richardson family/s in that villiage. I have never found this couple on a census. Perhaps ELIZABETH died as a young girl/lady, before 1837. I wonder if parish records show this? The 1841 census shows many of the family married and living in the Blockhouse area of Worcester, but NO sign of the parents, or indeed ELIZABETH. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 2. Hi John, I always tell people to get the microfilm if it shows that as the source of the IGI. There could be more information than is put on the IGI. The burials for the Parish were never extracted but they are usually on the Parish Registers. Also remember to use different spellings of surnames when looking through census records. 2. Peter Booth
    3. Joy, Go to www.familysearch.org and search using just the surname. It gives 156 entries with all variant surname spellings. You can have a lot of fun sorting them into families. Most look to be from 1600's If you search specifically for Mary Pethward there are only two possible births although others may not be recorded. Try Searching for occurrences of the surname in 1841 and 1851 census using Soundex. You might also look for the surname in submitted trees and surname lists at places like Rootsweb and Ancestry.
