Forgot to mention that his birthplace is given as Stourbridge in the "1901". He would have been born c1853. Hi Fraser could you please contact me off list (I didnt get your full email in the digest version). I was just going through 'The Archive Photographs Series - Redditch' and saw a photo with the following caption "... In the centre, at the back, is John Jakeman who managed Regent Coaches, the firm his father Harry helped to found." There is also a photo of a charabanc belonging to Regent Motorways "... who, for many years, operated from a premises in Alcester Street, opposite the Palace Theatre". It's always a painful experience to be Found Wrong - but sometimes this can be assuaged if the Results are more pleasant than having been Right :-) I've visited the site - thank you Polly and David - and wish the Western Front Association all the success it'll probably need. But I hope it can get a better price for the move/storage than the £62,000 and "six-figure sum" that I understand have so far been quoted... I don't recognise "Great Datford" in WOR... For what it's worth, a patch on the Stourbridge flight of Locks is referred to as "Dadford's Sheds" - but despite the Stourbridge Connection it seems wildly improbable. And there's Dodford some 3 miles NW of Bromsgrove that was within Bromsgrove Parish. Even Daylesford - a detached WOR Parish on the GLS/OXF Border - but that was about as far away from Stourbridge as it was possible to be while still standing on WOR soil... Some dates and places where the Censuses were taken would've perhaps made it a bit easier to solve. Thanks for your help Gus/ Steve, The person is John Jones, aged 36 living in Biddulph (Staffs) in the 1891 census (RG12/2848 - p28/ sch148) It looks like "Great Datford" to me - when you compare the individual letters to others on the page. No county is given which would make you think it was in Staffordshire. But I can't find it there either. Then on the 1881 census John Jones birthplace is Stourbridge, Worcestershire (John is in Wolverhampton in 1881, and It is definately the same John Jones. I can't find him (yet!) in 1901. Regards, Mark

Hello, I have found a REA family baptisms at Worcester for the 1860s. Alfred REA was the father and Elizabeth the mother. The only marriage I can find that fits is at Birmingham and I have this certificate. They are a puzzle. Alfred is the son of James on the certificate and Elizabeth is the daughter of John MORRIS. Is anyone else looking for this family. I know they moved to Manchester by 1881 but Alfred is elusive. I have a baptism for an Alfred in 1821 right period. I need to find him on a census. I don't know if the 1841 for Worcester is indexed but if anyone has come across him please let me know. Joan in Devon
While the 143 filing cabinets could be stored (with all the cards accessible) in a space of 55ft x 20ft - and be transported there on 2 medium-sized lorries - do not expect that the Fre*** Projects would ever be permitted to have them. With the cards destroyed, there'll only be one place to access the data -TNA, who charge £3.50 to download each one... *They* wouldn't let a Commercial Opportunity such as this to be destroyed by a "bunch of idiot do-gooders". It's MONEY that's behind the whole shabby affair, despite the Conspiracy Theorists' suggestion that it was because the filming and digitising had been done incompetently and TNA didn't want to be found out. We can, I fear, kiss this little lot goodbye... Hello List, Has anyone ever heard of "Great Datford" in Worcestershire. It is listed as a birthplace on a census piece, yet on a later census the same person is listed as being born in Stourbridge, Worcestershire. Regards, Mark
Would anyone have access to a Trades Directory which would give Anvil Making firms in the 1850s? (Staffs/ Warwick/ Worcs) I have just discovered that my Mother's family name was actually PEARSON not JOHNSON as she had been named and that my Great Grandfather was a Henry PEARSON blacksmith and anvil maker. Have had no luck in finding his birth death or marriage but his wife was Eleanor CLIFFORD THOMPSON (widow) born 1825 in Chilvers Coton and had a child Emma Clifford PEARSON in 1854 and my Granfather William Harvey Clifford PEARSON/JOHNSON in 1859. My William JOHNSON (1859) was a Police Constable in Birmingham and I have his records so I am mystified that it did not state his birth name. Does anyone know how name changes worked in the 1880s? Any advice gratefully received! Lin Watterson Isle of Wight UK

I don't have chance to compose a full reply, but my business is helping charities find funding for projects - if I could be of any assistance don't be afraid to ask! In 1852 Droitwich Borough was an administrator's and map-drawer's nightmare - which didn't get finally straightened out until 1933. Although it nominally consisted of 3 (Civil) Parishes: St Nicholas in the North West St Andrew in the South West St Peter in the South East [the North East contained part of Dodderhill, and the Disputed Lands of 'In Liberties' and 'Marlborough in the Vines' which were extra-parochial.] things weren't as clear-cut as they'd appear. St Nicholas had no church, and was ecclesiastically part of St Andrew. St Andrew (civil and ecclesiastical) included the old parish of St Mary de Witton, whose church had long ago fallen into disuse. St Peter claimed that St Andrew had stolen part of its land. St Andrew demurred, and as a compromise the lucky inhabitants paid Local Taxes to both parishes. {And a little later on, when the boundaries were adjusted in 1894, there was a small portion in the South West whose Official Name was "Unnamed". *That* state of affairs lasted until 1933. The area which Dared Not Speak Its Name is now called Chawson.} Witton, though, is Alive and Well, around ¼ mile to the South of the Town Centre. It contains a Post Office, a few shops, a pub, an hotel, 2 chapels and the Catholic Church, but to the casual eye would seem to be just another part of the town. Its nearest CofE church is St Peter.
