Hello everyone, I'm wondering if anyone can help re' the following. Almost all of my ancestors lived at Ebrington in the Cotswolds, the exception being Richard Jarvis who was baptised there in 1765 and buried there in 1850 but who is shown as having died at Shipston on Stour. Gloucestershire censuses 1851 to 1891 show no family which could have been his. I'm seeking information from the 1841 census for Worcestershire or church records giving details of Richard in the Shipston or adjacent areas. Any help/guidance would be much appreciated. Regards to all, Colin Jarvis.
Paul Sorry I was thinking of Oldbury not Cradley - Cradley is part of the WOR Census, comes under Stourbridge District! Helen New Zealand -----Original Message----- From: Paul Taylor [mailto:northshields1947-worcestershire@yahoo.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, 5 April 2005 6:05 a.m. To: ENG-WORCESTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WOR] 1851 Census - Simmons Does anyone have access to the index to the 1851 census for Worcestershire, which I believe is available on CD, as I am trying without much success to find out a bit about my gg grandfather, Charles Simmons. All I can say is that by the time of the 1851 census he was married to Sarah who would have been aged about 17 or 18 and was, I believe, born in Cradley. It is likely that they would have been living in the Malvern area. For what it is worth, by the time of the 1861 census, Charles had died but Sarah was living on Upper Howsell Road, Malvern. I would just say that as Charles could not read or write the name Simmons might have been spelt in whatever way the census clerk thought appropriate. Paul Do you know where/when Charles and Sarah married ?? If it was Cradle and they stayed in the area, they could be on the Staffordshire 1851 Census . For some unknown reason the Census Districts do not match county boundaries. Do you know Sarah's maiden name ? I have checked the WOR 1851 for all variations, without success. Hello everyone, Can anyone help with the following? I believe that Shipston originally came under Worcestershire before being transferred to Warwickshire. Could someone tell me up to what year the town came under Worcestershire. Thanks and regards to all. Colin Jarvis
Hello Colin, Shipston on Stour - both Town and Civil Parish was transferred from the Administrative County of Worcester to that of Warwick on 1 April 1931. Which Answers The Question As Set - but doesn't seem to answer WHY it was raised in the first place. If looking for it in all the Censuses (other than 1841**) it - and the whole of the rest of the Registration District of the same name, which included Parishes in Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire - was classed as being Warwickshire. **Not too sure about the LDS Transcription of the 1881 though. *That* seems to use a geography all of its own. As for looking on IGI/FamilySearch, my guess is that it's likely to be included under both Counties, but I've never attempted to look or check! Barbara, your Fletcher Square is probably just a local name not an official one. Lots of Alley Ways, Squares and Yards were given local names, usually names of the local family who lived there, such as the name of Fletcher, that is why you cannot find it in 1861. The area would have been called something else. Best Wishes from Linda.
I have been searching the 1861 Dudley census for my ARNOLD/HARNOLD/HARNEL/HARNALL family, but with no success. Family was as follows: Parents William & Elizabeth HARNOLD (married in 1840 in Sedgley, but living at Dudley Wood), known kids William b. 1845, John b. 1846 & Andrew b. 1852.( All born Netherton, Dudley) In 1871 the sons are living at Fletcher's Square, Netherton, Dudley (St. Andrew's parish) & I thought they might be at the same address in 1861. However, I can find neither the family nor the Fletcher Square address on the 1861 census. Can anyone please HELP? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Regards, Barbara Arnold

Hi Bill Many of the ROWBERRY family in Worcester worked for the railway, and I would be happy to help in any way that I can. What sort of information do you require? And having mentioned the name ROWBERRY perhaps I can remind you all about the ROWBERRY Family Gathering taking place over the weekend of 29th March to 1st April at the Hundred House Hotel, Great Witley. Everyone is welcome on the Saturday (you don't have to be a ROWBERRY or a RUBERY!) and the event itself on that day is FREE. I am new to this list, and am researching Joseph HOWELL. Joseph was transported to Tasmania in 1852. For stealing a Sheep from a Mr Hogg at Thurley, and was tried at Worcester on the 31 December 1849. He arrived in Tasmania on the 9/12/1852 , and was given a 7 yr sentence. He was from Elderfield in Gloucestershire. He was a farm labourer, aged 25, could read and write. He had a brothers William & John, and sisters Emma and Eliza. I was wondering if SKS could find Joseph in the 1851 census, or anything on his siblings for me. who his parents were. Or maybe something on who Mr Hogg was. Thanking you Kitty Cambridge Tasmania --
