A big thank you. To John Tysoe, Ruth, Vivien, Malcolm and John Richardson for all their help which is greatly appreciated. Problem is still not solved but as I have now found James SEENEY living in Hill Top Farm, Grafton Flyford in 1879 (Littlebury's Directory & Gazetteer of Worcester & Districts 1879) I am left wondering whether Henry's real name is James SEENEY. <grin> Back to the drawing board !!!! Once again Thank you all. Hi Folks, As far as I know there isn't an name index - - - yet. I think there is a project underway to do one. I know of someone doing Bromsgrove, but I don't know how formal this is. Or even how long this will take. #Plan A Meanwhile I suggest using the 1851, which is name indexed, and hoping they were they in 1841. (Remember the 1841 rounds down adult ages to the nearest multiple of 5.) #Plan B Use Google Advanced search options to search for a transcription. However, doing this on some transcriptions can be awkward. Some web pages are exceedingly long. Tip: download the Google Tool Bar on to your desktop. Find a transcription that you want to search through. (e.g. exact phrase "1841 census" , one of the words "Dudley", & press search.) Choose a website and go there. If it is a large page, use your browser's Back button. Go to the bottom of the Google page and click on "search within" results. Add a name or place that your hunting for. Press search. Now look at the right hand side of the Google tool bar. All your search criteria are buttoned there, or out of site behind a double chevron. Click on a button and Google will instantly jump down hundreds of pages to that spelling. Repeated clickings may find other occurences of that word. You can put more criteria in your initial search, but that may limit the trawl, especially if you're not aware of variants or transcription errors. If you find a transcription in pdf format, providing it's "typed" there is a search engine built in to Adobe Reader. You should be using version 6.0.3 Hope some of you find this useful. Hi list, I wanted to let the fellow who was researching PLANT family members that there is an organisation named 'THE PLANT FAMILY GROUP", who have researched just about ALL of the PLANT people in the Staffordshire, Worcs (and the BlackCountry) regions of England. The e-mail address is: Wkeith@Plant30.freeserve.co.uk Currently, we are working on tracing the DNA of all Plant families, it is all very interesting, and should help pinpoint our original ancestor! thanks John and Helen for the information on the 1841 census. Jayne
Hi Georgina, I've looked on the 1851 Worcestershire census and there aren't any Jarmans on it at all. I've looked on my map, and Ludlow is right on the Shropshire/Herefordshire border, but actually in Shropshire. The Worcestershire border is very close by too. Bitterley is just a few miles from Ludlow, in Shropshire. Suggest you try a Shropshire list. Love to Mickey and Donald! Vivien
G'day Colin, Can't help with the marriage certificate but would you like the 1851 census entry? The address in 1851 is Berrington Lane, Tenbury. Regards from Malcolm Platt-Grigg. The rest of the information is not readable and I would like to know the following, if possible:- Residences at time of marriage, bothe father's names and the names of the witnesses. Hi Everyone I have within a family I am researching for a friend a couple George and Mary Plant. In 1851,1861 and 1871 they both give their place of birth as Wenlock. In 1881 George gives his place of birth as New Works and Mary gives Small Hill.In 1891 they both say Wellington and then finally in 1901 Mary now widowed gives New Works as her place of birth. Would the New Works and Small Hill given in 1881 possibly give a more accurate idea of where they were both born.I understand New Works is associated with mining.George was a Iron Miner and then later a Coal Miner so may of come from a mining family.I have not found their marriage yet,if I knew exactly where they were from it may give a clue to where the marriage took place. They were both born about 1826. regards Mike Roberts
Hi Folks I have just had a major breakthrough on my TUNKS line. I have found on the 1871 census a relative who I didn't know about. Isabella Tunks was born to Elizabeth Tunks, no father mentioned, in 1818 in Ludlow. On Isabella's marriage in 1841 to William Corfield, she notes Richard Tunks, farmer of Bitterley, as her father. On the 1871 census I find a Maria Jarman, widow born 1813, living with children of Isabella Tunks Corfield. She is noted as their Aunt. I have found Maria Tunks marrying a John Jarman in Aymestry, Hereford in 1833. Maria Jarman notes her birthplace as Ludlow on the 1871 census, but on the 1881, 1891 she is born in Bitterley. Maria and Isabella are obviously sisters. I need to find Maria and John Jarman on the 1841 and 1851 census, but not sure if it would be the Bitterley/Ludlow area or the Hereford area. Does anyone have access to these census? Hi Folks, I'm new to this list, trying to discover more about my great-grandfather Joseph COX. I have his birth certificate, which shows he was born in Springs Mire, Dudley on 2 January 1848. His father was Joseph COX, a miner. His mother was Frances Ann COX (formerly DAVIS). Is there a name index for the 1851 census of Dudley? If so I wonder if some kind soul could help me by looking for the above family there? Many thanks in advance. Dave Moore Bristol
hello List I am wondering if the 1841 census for Dudley is available on CD and if it is whether there is an index to it. I am looking for the family of a John CORDING/CORDEN and a Thomas HUGHES. kind regards Jayne
Hello Sharon I have found an advert and article about Windshields in a 1951 Guide to Worcester. The company's headquarters moved to the Barbourne premises in 1930. The latter became home to mass production for the motor car industry. During WWII thirteen factories in the county were devoted to the Company's products. Lots more info. Will send you a copy off-list together with the details of the family who were living at the Barbourne Inn at the time of the 1881 census. Bill Gwilliam's book Old Worcester: People and Places mentions that Gregory's Mill was a grist mill built in 1369. Thomas Gregory rented the mill in the 17th century. It was still working in the 1914-18 War, but by 1950 it had been completely demolished. I do recommend that you and your daughter visit the Worcester History Centre, where you will be able to look at the above book and Trade Directories. The staff are most helpful and will also be able to show you where to look at the index of old photographs, which may contain images of the places you are interested in. Regards Jacquie
Hi Listers My WOODWARD, STOKES and NOTT families in the Malvern area of WOR now seem to be connected with LINTON (LYNTON), STEPHENS and GARRET(T) in the mid 1700s. If anyone is also researching these names, I would be pleased to hear from you. Kind regards Joy
Thankyou for your welcome to me as a new Lister. Most of my maternal forebears were from Staffordshire, however some I believe originated in Worcs. My brick wall is a Sir Thomas Turberville bart (baronet) Tibberton House ? Worcs, who had a daughter Hannah , probably early 1700's. She married a John Morris 2nd April 1845 and in 1847 had a daughter , Mary Morris who married Thomas Smith of Tibbington House Tipton Staffs. My interest is in the Turbervilles Does any Lister have any information about Sir Thomas and his family or the Morris family. Cheers and greetings from NthQld Australia. Gloria H
Hello everyone, Have hit an absolute brick wall in tracing not only the birthplace of my gggggrandfather but also where most of his children ended up. He made a will in 1752 in which the beneficiaries were his wife and children. A sum of £75 was deposited with a Mr Rogers of Shipston with instructions as to what payments were to be made to the beneficiaries. At present my only hope seems to find if any records exist of Mr Rogers business and if details exist of where payments to the beneficiaries were sent. Any ideas? Regards, Colin Jarvis.
