For anyone who has ancestors in or around Sedgley (not far from Dudley) the Ancient Manor of Sedgley web site is a must. Even if you have no connections it is worth a visit as it has so much information about the area. http://www.sedgleymanor.com/ Regards Janice
A very big thank you to all who responded to my request, especially Bob, Marion, Vivien and Colin. I never cease to to amazed at how helpful everyone on this list is. Janice
Yes John! They all had to be baptised, it wasn't their fault if they were illegitimate, and the parents were afraid not to have the child baptised anyway. In 1804 (or at any other time) a child could be baptised at any Church of England church whether or not its parents were married - for it was the CHILD, not its parents, that was being Entered in the Congregation. It might well - depending on the level of Charity of the Baptiser, and the level of Contrition of the Unwed Mother - be given a Derogatory Label, such as (in order of the Baptiser's view on the seriousness of the mother's sin) Bastard Base Born Natural Child or even without comment (but that was rare). Some might add "widow" against the mother's name - but if the child had a surname-looking Middle Name, then that would still give sufficient doubt. But the lack of parents' marriage wasn't a bar to a baptism - although baptism (then, as now) was NOT a Legal Requirement. But many Sects (including the CofE) held that it was a necessary pre-requisite should the child wish later to be confirmed or married under the sect's rules. Found this in the 1829 Pigots Directory for Worcester. I was right. Charles Middleton was there because of his job. He's living in Lark Hill, Crescent Then several pages on under the Miscellaneous heading is: Military Depot for the County & City of Worcester, St Nicholas' st - Charles Waterson, superintendent. --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Hello Maggs, lots of things do still happen there, like a beautiful fillet steak wrapped in bacon in a red wine & mushroom sauce mmmm. Roger & Wendy Carr run the pub and I would recommend it to anyone (I have no connections to the people or the pub -just a diner) Regards Jean I haven't been there for quite a while and have been thinking of a different place to go. Maybe I'll suggest it to my darling hubby, methinks the very mention of the fillet steak could do the trick. Wolfie
Hello Quick question for someone *in the know* about these things. In the year 1804; could a child have been baptised in a C of E church in Lower Mitton, without the parents being married? John Richardson Cambs

Thanks to John and Ruth for finding Emma Mugg and finding an error for me. Jabez is still missing but now I know where Emma was and I have a better age for her, which ties in to her age in 1881. Thanks Jenn
> Does anyone know if Morton upon Swale exists / existed in Worcs? Hi Alison There isn't a Morton upon Swale in Worcs on the Old Maps site. However there is a MORTON BAGOT on Genuki. There is also a possibility of a mistranscrioption - other possibilities from Genuki could be MARSTON or MATHON. Or a very long shot could be that he was actually born in Morton Upon Swale and totally confused the enumerator who thought he meant Morton Bagot! Have you managed to find him on any other census details, was he still alive in 1871? Hope this helps and doesn't confuse more :-) Regards Liz
Hi I am new to this list. My research has just moved into this area. My GGGrandfather was Benjamin BATEMAN baptized 19 Oct 1823 at St John Bedwardine. Parents were William BATEMAN b abt 1795 buried 1 Dec 1826 married 24 Dec 1822 at St John Bedwardine to Sarah GIBBS b abt 1801 buried 12 Apr 1825 at St John Bedwardine. When Benjamin was born Williams occupation was given as Glover living at (Nr)?? Pitmaston Any body on the list researching these names? I would also be grateful for any back ground information on the area especially at this time and the church. Also where do I look for wills? Sorry for all the Qs. regards Sharon in NZ
Would any lister have the images on CD for Worcestershire/Staffordshire and be able to look at something for me please? The following family appears in the Worcestershire index for 1851 :- Kingswinford HO107/2036/346 Moor Lane Samuel Dorricourt H 37 Hannah Dorricourt W 38 William Dorricourt S 12 [and various other Dorricourt children] Hannah Dorricourt married Samuel Derricott in Bayton, WOR in 1844, and at that time she had a son called William, which I think is the son named above. My question is simply is he actually called Dorricourt on the census or is he in fact Preece? Thanks in advance. Can sks advise of the significance of an alias on a baptism record? The entry appears on consecutive records with a change of name on subsequent entries. The entries are recorded in the Parish Register a: Elizabeth daughter of John and Mary Grove (superscript; alias Perry) was baptised December the first 1751. The superscript may have been added later John son of John and Mary Grove alias Perry was baptised the twenty second day of February 1756 William son of John and Mary Perry was baptised this twenty sixth day of November 1758. All subsequent children were recorded as per the entry for William Regards Bob Millman Strathpine Qld
I am looking for an elusive couple in 1861. Jabez Loat, not living with his family and I can't find him in the index. B. abt 1835 in Bromsgrove and his wife to be Emma Mugg b. 1845 in Bromsgrove. Her father is William. They ended up getting married in 1864. Jabez ends up in jail eventually. Is anyone else researching one of these families? Thanks Jenn
