Hello Jim, Er - would you believe "St Swithins Street" for the church - and the "Parish of St Swithins" for the locality? In rather more serious and useful detail, the church comprises the Eastern end of the Southern side of St Swithins Street - which forms its North wall. Its South wall is the Eastern end of the Northern side of Church Street. Its East wall 'fills the gap' between St Swithins Strret and Church Street. St Swithins Street runs East from the Southern end of The Cross ('The Centre of Worcester') while its Westward projection, Broad Street, runs straight to the Severn Bridge. Its Eastward projection is Mealcheapen Street. Does this give enough information? If needed I could send you off-list a bitmap image based on a map of 1835. Hello Susan, You'd seem to've got the date of 1844s Easter Sunday already without having to look in the 'Odd' pages of an old Church of England Prayer Book - April 7 it was... As for Where - that's another story. Albany Terrace was within the Township of The Tything of Whistones - a subdivision of Claines Parish - so if his parents followed the Official Rules (but not many did) then Claines is your place. EXCEPT... The *nearest* place licensed for CofE Baptisms was St Oswalds Hospital (*not* the sort of hospital we have today - it was an almshouse) followed by St George's Chapel (whose registers were in any case combined with Claines until c.1862). And there were all the other CofE churches within the City listed by Liz, one of which might have had a Parson the parents happened to like. But if they *weren't* CofE then the field is fairly open - and not all of their registers have survived :-( HTH Gus ----- Original Message ----- From: trevor hackett <trevor.hackett@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-WORCESTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 10, 2005 6:40 PM Subject: [WOR] Baptism - Easter Sunday 1844 > My gt grandfather - John HOLDEN was born 1st February 1844 in Albany Terrace, Worcester and in a book he wrote he stated that he was baptised on the Easter Sunday of that year. > > Could sks please tell me where I would find a calendar that would give me the date of Easter Sunday in 1844 and also what possible parishes would he have been baptised in? > > Many thanks, > Susan > > > > > Susan Hackett > > > ==== ENG-WORCESTER Mailing List ==== > FreeREG Project: parish register database > http://freereg.rootsweb.com > > UK Census on-line > http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ > http://www.worcestershiresurnames.co.uk/ > >
Can anyone tell me what Parish I should look under on the 1841 CD for York Place, Worcester. Better still is there a map of parishes, enumeration districts etc? Trying to track down addresses on 1841 CDs is very trying. Roger -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. According to GenUKI, Easter Sunday 1844 in Great Britain was on April 7th. The Eastern Churches (Orthodox) celebrate Easter on a different date so beware of international websites! Vivien
Liz, Would that link be calendarhome.com? Another useful (but unfortunately American) link for Easter is http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/easter.html. Hi Susan Back again hopefully with some useful information for you regarding possible parish churches for Albany Terrace in 1844. Looking on multimap Albany Terrace is about 1 mile to the north-west of the cathedral. These are the parishes of Worcester city (from Genuki) All Saints a.. Cathedral a.. St Alban a.. St Andrew a.. St Clement a.. St Helen a.. St John Bedwardine a.. St Martin a.. St Michael a.. St Nicholas a.. St Oswald's Hospital a.. St Peter the Great a.. St Swithin This link : http://freespace.virgin.net/david.beacham/wbells.index.html has a map which shows the parish churches of Worcester on a map of 1651 and I would suggest from this that the most likely parish church for his baptism would be St Alban's. However it could also have been St Andrew's, St Michaels or even the Cathedral itself. I hope this gives you something to go on best wishes Liz ----- Original Message ----- From: "trevor hackett" <trevor.hackett@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-WORCESTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 10, 2005 6:40 PM Subject: [WOR] Baptism - Easter Sunday 1844 > My gt grandfather - John HOLDEN was born 1st February 1844 in Albany Terrace, Worcester and in a book he wrote he stated that he was baptised on the Easter Sunday of that year.
Hello David, Many thanks for that information. It looks more convenient to use the park-and-ride than get caught up in one-way streets, looking for a carpark. Kind regards Joan
Thanks to Liz and Denise for their prompt replies. Susan Hackett

Thanks for that link Richard - there is also useful information on there regarding the definition of a scholar with regards to the census returns.. Liz
My gt grandfather - John HOLDEN was born 1st February 1844 in Albany Terrace, Worcester and in a book he wrote he stated that he was baptised on the Easter Sunday of that year. Could sks please tell me where I would find a calendar that would give me the date of Easter Sunday in 1844 and also what possible parishes would he have been baptised in? Many thanks, Susan Susan Hackett
Census definitions for idiot etc can be found here http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/abbrcen.html regards Richard
I agree - I have seen children described as scholar at improbably young ages, and others who may have literally 'gone to school' but who never learned to sign their names. But it might depend what date we are dealing with - I'm afraid I have lost track of this! I would expect 'scholar' to mean something more serious in 1891 than it did in 1851, say. Hello Carol, The 1901 census (Ancestry) has a Frances RAWLINGS working as 'Housemaid Domestic' in Aldridge, Staffordshire. She's 20, born Leamington. Also an Isabel RANKINS (looks like RAWLINS to me) working as 'Housemaid Domestic' in Leamington Priors. She's 22, born Leamington. Let me know if you would like further information on these records. Thank you, I will work on what you wrote. I do have access to ancestry, but missed those.................... I subscribed to the Digest form and got the L type. So, I just unsubscribed and subscribed again to the Digest form. Hope it works this time. Great, it worked-a Digest form just popped into my email. :) Where do you write for birth, death and marriage cert's in Worcester? Is there an email address for them? Thank You, Carol
Does anyone have any Green family members in the above areas? I have a Jane Green, d/o Thomas Green and Elizabeth Bradley, born 1 June 1788 in Crowle. Jane married Francis Surman of Upton Snodsbury on 10 April 1810 in Upton Snodsbury. Hope to make a connection. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hi Jacquie, Many thanks for answering my query. I have had a look at the Worcestershire Library & History Centre's website and note that there is no parking available there. Unfortunately, the link to the City Council's site for information on parking did not work. Are you familiar with the Centre ? If so, can you please tell me which is the most convenient carpark for long stay or does the city have a park-and-ride scheme ? Kind regards Joan
