He married Rosannah Heath in 1849 in Tipton, he was a miner and on the marriage certificate his father is Joseph who was a nailor. I thought I had found the family by matching back from the 1861 to the 1851 and 1841 census. I though it looked like his mother was Susannah and he had brothers Daniel and William. This seemed to fit because on one of the later censuses there is a Daniel living next door. However, I then realised that if he married in 1847 he would not be living at home on 1851 census without wife Rosannah. I'm really stuck because there are about 3 joseph grainger's born abt 1825 in and around Dudley. > > There are several on family search but again I can't think of any way to differenciate between them. > > Any ideas please? > > Many thanks > > Jean > > > ==== ENG-WORCESTER Mailing List ==== > FreeREG Project: parish register database > http://freereg.rootsweb.com > > UK Census on-line > http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ > http://www.worcestershiresurnames.co.uk/ > >

    1. Any Suggestions for these Mysteries?
    2. Carol and Frank
    3. Hello again from Massachusetts, I have two more mysteries. And I found a Thomas Rawlins -age 32, born 1829 in the 1861 Census as a Groom for Ben Green living in Yardley born in Meyden (clearly meriden on the Census). And a Thomas Rawlins born 1846 -in the 1871 census living in Bordsley, Aston/St. Andrews district-ancestry has him listed as being born in Marden-the census itself shows Meriden. I don't have them in my Family Tree and haven't found them in an earlier census....not yet anyway. Any suggestions.........I'm sure you'll say-"Keep Looking". And I will. Still looking for a Thomas Lee, Clerk in Civil Service who had a daughter Isabella Lee born approx 1842........somewhere in England. :( He was one of my GG Grandfathers. Isabella lived in Merdin when she married.........It doesn't mean she was born there-learned that from experience. Thanks Friends, I do appreciate your help and Suggestions. Especially to John who found Isabela Rawlins.............very mispelled.........I'm so impressed that he figured that one out. Carol

    3. Dear Gus, Liz, Mike and everyone else Sorry for my late reply here, but thank you for everyone who has responded to my query and taking the time to do so. I do appreciate it, and glad of a list such as this one. At least it did not send me on a wild goose chase to North Yorks. Mike, thanks for the transcription re 1861 census - shows commercial sites have their limitations. Interestingly, Alice's place of birth is given as Nairn. The only Nairn I'm able to locate is the one a few miles from Inverness. Does such a place exist in Worcs, before I attempt to track down an 1861 image? Alison http://www.alisonbryan.com/notes

    1. Re: [WOR] Amblecote in parish of Old Swinford?
    2. John Tysoe
    3. Amblecote is a Difficult One... Ecclesiastically it was a hamlet of Old Swinford (except that *it* was in Staffordshire, while all the rest was in Worcestershire) until 1845 when it became a separate Ecclesiastical Parish in its own right (and which included Wollaston, in Worcestershire). Its church was Holy Trinity (Licensed in 1842; Consecrated in 1844) according to the 1851 Census of Religious Worship This would be the church of 'your' marriage. The parish was split in 1860, when Wollaston St James was founded. As for the rest of Old Swinford, that was further subdivided by 1881, leaving: Old Swinford St Mary - the original 'mother' church 1839 - Lye Christ Church 1861 - Stourbridge St John the Evangelist 1866 - Stourbridge St Thomas 1873 - Stamber Mill St Mark Civilly it was a part of Oldswinford (note the different spelling) but was transferred to Worcestershire from Staffordshire as recently as 1966, only to disappear into the Unlamented "County of West Midlands" in 1973. It says that the marriage was solemnized at Amblecote in the Parish of Old Swinford in the counties of Stafford & Worc. I've been searching for more information on this parish. Is it correct to presume that Old Swinford would have been the larger town with the church and that it is now called Stourbridge? Oh, btw, the marriage was in 1857 if this helps for a time frame. Now I have located something else to confuse me, Is the parish church for Amblecote St.Mary's, St. Thomas or Holy Trinity? I'm really getting confused and could use some tutoring please. >

    3. Old Swindsford is on one side of Stourbridge and Amblecote on the other. Old Swinford is the ancient parish and the other two are more modern, I don't have the exact dates to hand but they were both created in the mid 1800's. As for names, Old Swinford is St Marys, Holy Trinity is at Amblecote and St Thomas is in the centre of Stourbridge.
