    3. Yes Folks it me again. There's another opportunity to bump into relatives this Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday, 29 & 30 May, from 10.30 am until 5 pm. This time at Avoncroft Museum of buildings. Bromsgrove BMSGH and The Bromsgrove Society will have stands there. The record for the last event was 15 relative connections. So shut down that computer, leave the gardening till the week after and make "yurself" known. You never know, some of the photos may be of your lot. -- Mike Yegwart Bromsgrove Branch Chairman BMSGH bmsgh.org

    1. Lickey records + WILKES families
    2. Ian Preece
    3. Many thanks for all the suggestions about the records for Lickey, it seems for those who haven't seen the correspondence that they are held at Birmingham Central Library. For anyone with links in that general area, I have today found some of "my" Wilkes families from Bromsgrove baptised at Cofton Hackett - the records for there have been filmed but I don't think they form part of the IGI. There seem to be lots of families in the records there giving their abode either as Bromsgrove or Kings Norton. Best wishes Ian Preece -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Ah yes this would be the "short form" birth certificate, which just gives the details of the person born and very little else. It was perfectly acceptable to authorities but i'm not sure it is now. My mother's birth certificate was just a fragile scrap of paper when it came to me. I spent the £7.00 on a full version because it was clear that if I handled the original very much it would fall apart. -- Chris Ramsbottom researching: BARRATT, DANCER, FELLOWS, GOODES, ROBINSON, TUCKLEY, WHEWAY CAMPTON, GREGORY all in and around Birmingham/Smethwick, 1850 to present day

    3. Hi Cathy, If you go to http://bmsgh.org/ then Bookshop on the left panel, then Parishes, etc, in the Worcestershire box you will find a great many parishes have had their monumental inscriptions recorded on to microfiche. Unfortunately air pollution is destroying much of the text of old tombstones. (It is also not good practise to dig out moss and lichen, the sandstone often comes with it.) Good hunting -- Mike Yegwart Bromsgrove Branch Chairman BMSGH bmsgh.org

    1. Certificates in general
    2. John Tysoe
    3. I have been preparing the Estate Accounts of my late father, and among his papers I came across both his and my mother's original birth certificates and their original marriage certificate. All of them provided (to me at any rate) minor surprises. Father's Birth Certificate 1) I had believed all birth certificates were printed in red ink - but this one, dated 19 April 1911 - was in black. When did the colour change? 2) The price was 2s. 7d [13p in Funny Money], while for a copy (if requested later) it was 3s. 7d (including 1d Stamp Duty and a 1-year search) plus 6d Search Fee for every other year that year [18p + 2½p]... Mother's Birth 'Certificate' 1) Although printed in red, it was a 'Certificate of Registration of Birth' dated 19 November 1913. 2) The only information it gave was her name, date of birth, date of registration, and the Register number and Entry number. It also bore a "NOTICE - This Certificate when duly filled up by the Registrar, is to be given (*on demand*) to the INFORMANT at the time of Registering th Birth, on payment of a fee not exceeding Three-pence [1¼p]". I have never seen such a document before - it is printed on flimsy paper and measures some 6½ x 4½in [165 x 115mm], and isn't stamped. 3) It would seem that she never had any other certificate - my father was meticulous in his filing of 'Important Papers' - but she nonethelss held a series of passports... Parents' Marriage Certificate 1) Dated 25 September 1937 it was evidently written out in full by the Vicar of Claines Church - who copied *everything* - including the signatures of the happy Couple and their witnesses. 2) Was this a usual practice - and if so, when did it cease? Gus PS My apologies for the cross-posting

    3. Hi all, The 1861 census for for my ggrandfather JOHN PITT living in Worcester shows him working as a signalman for what looks like the N M Railway. There's also a 12 year old with a different name ( looks like JOSHUA ROBERTSON) 'working in the engine shed' but shown as his son. Can anyone identify the name of Railway Company they worked for? Many thanks John Pitt _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. Get MSN Messenger 7.0 today! http://messenger.msn.co.uk

    1. Re . Monument inscriptions or tombstones.
    2. Chris Abbley
    3. Hi Cathy, Grave markers in England, and I thought in other parts of the world too, are called tombstones, gravestones or monuments. Monumental inscriptions are the inscriptions written on the tombstones etc. As regards your question "are there many of either in churchyards dating back into the 1600 - middle 1800's", most old churches still have very many dating back to this time (and before). My local church has gravestones dating back to the early 1700's, although some are difficult to read now. The trend in some area's is to clear churchyards of gravestones and place them around the perimeter wall. Reasons given are to "tidy up" or because of health and safety reasons, in case one falls onto someone. Where are you Cathy? How are your graves marked? Chris Abbley - Researching Abley/Abbley surnames worldwide.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Please forgive my lack of knowledge but, in England are the grave markers know as monument inscriptions or tombstones? Also, are there many of either in church yards dating back into the 1600 - middle 1800's? If not, where did they go? Thanks Cathy --------------------------------------------------------------------- Outgoing and incoming mail is Norton Antivirus Checked
