    1. Searching Pedigree Resource Files on LDS
    2. Hi Has anyone had experience of searching the pedigree resource files on LDS using a submission number? My problem is that there are thousands of entries and I can't get past 4583 which ends at H. I know there are more because I tried searching on a random name that comes later in the alphabet and it still shows the same submission number. I wanted to see the whole submission but I have tried wildcards and several different ways of searching and I can't seem to get the rest of the submssion. Any help greatly appeciated. Jean

    1. Paper Mills
    2. Roger Jones
    3. For added interest ….. Edwin Lees on page 198 of his 1856 book ‘Pictures of Nature’ mentions a paper mill near Alfrick, and I believe he talks about one of my ancestors. He says ….. “I remember the mill in its integrity, when a little depressed Welshman, struggling with poverty, and a large family, tried to make a living here by manufacturing a very coarse cap-paper. The poor fellow had a long way to take his paper to purchasers, by bad roads, in a rickety, yawning cart, drawn by a stumbling half-starved horse. He fought hard against destiny; but the excise were sharp upon him, and the Birmingham dealers cut him out. How could he contend against them? He gave up the struggle, went to turn paper into gold in Australia; and his mill, done up like himself, fell to pieces, and no one has cared to rebuild it. The stone that compressed his ragged materials, broken in two, alone remains to intimate that a mill once existed here; and the liberated stream rattles past with a scoffing cry.” The stream is the Leigh Brook and the area is now the Knapp and Papermill Nature Reserve. 1. Paper-mills and -making in WOR
    2. John Tysoe
    3. As there've been 2 or 3 different enquiries on this subject, it seemed better to reply to The list rather than miss anybody out... The Victoria County History of Worcestershire doesn't have very much - but parts of the following MAY be useful. VOLUME II [published 1906] Page 255 - 'general industry' - stated that there was insufficient space to deal with most industries, but DID mention a report of a Paper Mill at "Hurcote" [apparently in Kidderminster Parish, but it referred to the Hurcote Parish Registers] where a death was recorded in 1653. Page 408 - North & Middle Littleton "Papermaking was carried on here early in the nineteenth century, and became a somewhat important industry in the neighbourhood, employing many hands; but the business becoming unprofitable, the extensive buildings fell into ruin and were finally taken down." [nb. No mention under 'Harvington']. Volume III [published 1913] Page 167 - Kidderminster "... the hamlet of Hoobrook, where there is a (now disused) paper-mill." Page 210 - Stone "Paper and yarn-mills were formerly worked at Hoobrook, but are now disused." [I didn't realise that Hoobrook fell into two Parishes...] Page 179 - Kings Norton "The chief mnanufactures are paper ..." Page 418 - Inkberrow "Papermaking was carried on at Inkberrow during the first half of the 19th century, but the industry became extinct about 1850. The mills were at Midsummer Meadow, Pool Mill and Little Nobury, the last surviving a long time after the others were demolished." [Presumably this last referred to the buildings, rather than the trade.] Page 468 - Overbury "The Carrant Brook ... formerly supplied the power for paper, silk and corn-mills." Page 472 - Overbury "The paper-mill had disappeared before 1868 ..." Volume IV [published 1924, but largely completed by 1915] Pages 15-16 - Beoley "In 1650 there [was] ... a paper-mill in the occupation of Nicholas CLOWS, and another paper-mill called Seales Mill." Page 234 - Astley "Three ... mills ... on Glasshampton Brook were leased ... in 1739 (at which date they were paper-mills) ..." As far as the Ex-Par area called 'Paper Mills' in Wychbold is concerned, the only reference is: Volume III, page 58 "[in 1884] Paper Mills was transferred from Hampton Lovett to Dodderhill." [I find this hard to believe - but I've not attempted to check *their* references!] HTH Gus ----- Original Message ----- From: Steven Gould <Stevegol@gould.ndo.co.uk> To: <ENG-WORCESTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 01, 2005 7:45 PM Subject: Re: [WOR] RE: Paper Mill Replies > > Any one have info on Gould family once owned paper mill near Harvington > around 1800 to 1840s? > > > Regards > > Steven Gould > > > > ==== ENG-WORCESTER Mailing List ==== > Transcribers wanted for Worcestershire FreeREG > for more information see http://freereg.rootsweb.com > UK Census on-line > http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ > http://www.worcestershiresurnames.co.uk/ > >

    3. I have just joined the list and am seeking info on the family of William TANDY. He was the 2nd husband of my grt.grt.grandmother Elizabeth KISS nee KENNEDY. The info on their marriage certificate indicated William was born in Worcestershire (c1809), his parents being William TANDY (farmer) and Mary Harwood. That is all I have on him back "home". He was a convict, transported to Australia, but I don't know what his crime was at this stage. Anyone searching this family I would like to make contact. TIA Marie from Aus.

    3. I've just added a further 70 graves for Grimley which now completes those graves that were photographed on that trip. The search index is currently being updated but it may take a couple of hours as there is now over 5,500 pages in the site which means there is over 5,000 photos ... phew I'm now going to go and watch the telly and have a break as it has just taken nearly 6 hours to do the Grimley graves so I think I've earned it! 1. MAYALL of Hanley Castle, & SAYCE / SAITH
    2. Bob New
    3. Does anyone have an interest in the MAYALL name? I checked out the Parishmouse website, following an update just reported by Sally Lloyd, and found that at Hanley Castle grave 5 recorded Richard MAYALL and his wife Hannah who died in 1872 and 1878 respectively. My family information shows that Richard MAYALL's two sisters Mary and Maria married (at St Mary's, Hanley Castle), respectively, William SAICE or SAITH, 23 Dec 1833, and John SAICE or SAITH, 23 Oct 1825. William and John were brothers, quite possibly twins, and were baptised at Thruxton, Herefordshire, on 24 Aug 1800 (their surname recorded then as SAYSE). Richard MAYALL and Hannah were also married on 23 Dec 1833 - as was William SAICE and Mary MAYALL above - and each was a witness for the other. Previously in 1825 Mary was a witness at Maria's marriage. William SAICE / SAITH and Mary MAYALL are my g-g-grandparents. Why William and John, and their families, used both the SAICE (more usually SAYCE) and SAITH names is a mystery; my only suggestion is that SAICE was equated with the verb "says" and then with its biblical equivalent "saith". Of course back in the Welsh Marches, where the SAYCE name comes from, it denotes "English" - Sais, just as Sassenach does in Scotland. John SAICE/SAITH was recorded on the 1861 Census as a "navigator" - a 'navvy', perhaps, labouring on the construction of the railways. Probably likewise his brother William, who died of jaundice in 1839; Williams two sons were both railway platers. Back to MAYALL - John, Maria, Richard and Mary (in that order) were the children of John MAYOL of Hanley Castle and Hannah, his wife. A map of the distribution of the MAYALL name (in all the spellings I can think of) from the English 1881 Census (a total of 1197 people; men, women and children) shows a large group in the north of England - 529 in Lancashire and 111 in Yorkshire. Then separately 110 in Gloucestershire with to the north 64 in Worcestershire and 47 in Staffordshire, and to the south 80 in Wiltshire. Rik Mayall, the comedian, also hails from Worcestershire. I'm still searching for any connection with someone who is a celebrity or famous. He'd do! Bob New coordinator of the Surname NEW Y-DNA Testing Project.

My Hawker family is from Worcestershire. See; http://www.connectedglobe.com/family/web/hawkerfam/ Curiously, I have fond memories of Wychbold. My mother's brother (nothing to do with the Hawkers) had a good friend (Johnny Jones) who had a couple of very old Aunts in Wychbold. When I was a kid (1950s) we used to visit and they were great fun. Auntie Effie was about 60 and Auntie Gee was 100. There was also an Uncle Wilf, I think he was a brother. They had a big Mulberry tree in the garden and a talking Jackdaw lived in it. Just a coincidental miscellany. Someone may have a connection.
