    3. Hi Ann, If you look on the National Archives site I think you will find your HENRY BIRKETT's will there and you will be able to download it for a modest price. Go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ Go to the left hand box where it says quick search and then click on Advanced search, if you then type in HENRY BIRKETT 1840 it should bring you to his will below. Description Will of Henry Birkett, Gentleman of Yardley , Worcestershire Date 15 January 1840 Catalogue reference PROB 11/1921 Wills usually give you so much more than census details as they usually help arrange family members. 3. Oh yes, thank you! I'm trying to develop an understanding of the iron business as it relates to my family in England and Colonial America. I would like to expand on the Stourbridge connection. That's the kind of thing my great nephews are sure to ask about, and someday my library will go to them. ;-) Benedict Arnold's men destroyed the forge and the furnace John Reveley set up. After the war, John's son Joseph went to Tennessee and became a potter, where the clay was considered excellent for that purpose. I wonder if he found Stourbridge clay there? Did Stourbridge know how important the Continental Congress considered them to be? 3. Hello, My gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather John Reveley emigrated to America in 1765 from Cumberland. He was in the forge business. This entry is in the Calendar of Virginia State Papers, Volume VIII: March 29, 1776 The Committee of Safety of Virginia considered a proposal submitted by John Reveley to erect an air Furnace for casting cannon. He was requested to examine the lands in the neighborhood of the coal pits on the James River and make experiments of any clay he may suppose to be of the Sturbridge, and fit for making bricks for to erect an air Furnace and to attend the Committee as soon as he shall have made such experiments with an account of his discoveries and an estimate of the expense of erecting such a furnace as is proposed by him. Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts was set up by emigrants from Stourbridge, but I found no mention of clay there. I did find this mention at http://www.stourbridge.co.uk/htm/glass.htm : "For centuries glass has been manufactured in the Stourbridge area. The rich natural resources of coal and fireclay for lining furnaces made it the perfect location for the industry." Does anyone have any information on Stourbridge fireclay? Thanking you in advance, Sarah Reveley San Antonio, Texas

    3. Merely to add a little (nominal) Clarification to the earlier postings... The quoted Parish name is confusing - mainly because the area itself was confused and complex - but one thing can be said with certainty is that it WASN'T "In the Liberties Marlborough and Marlborough in the Vines"... Cross Way IS in 'The Vines' - immediately opposite "The Gardeners Arms" - but in 1851 was in Dodderhill Parish, being the part of that Parish that was 'within the Liberties of Droitwich Borough' and was created as a separate Civil Parish in 1866 named "Dodderhill In Liberties". It had only a short independent life, being abolished in 1884, and divided between Droitwich's 3 Parishes of SS Andrew, Nicholas and Peter. "Marlborough" was Extra-Parochial in 1851 and MAY have been in two separate parts - I've been unable to find any Map that shows its nominal boundaries, but it was 'taken' in 2 parts in the 1851 Census. So when the Civil Parish of "Marlborough in the Vines" was created in 1858 it MAY have had a Detached Portion that had originally been known as (plain) "Marlborough". It, too, was mercifully abolished in 1884, disappearing into St Nicholas. So Mr EVANS' Address would've been Cross Way Vines Lane [Dodderhill] In Liberties Droitwich. His wife Harriet evidently was employed by the Droitwich Private Lunatic Asylum - still happily standing, but now trading as "The Droitwich Working Mens Club"...
