Mike (and Jim), don't overlook the LYTTELTON variant (as in Humphrey!). FreeBMD has two LYTTELTON marriages in Worcestershire between those dates - William Henry in Droitwich, Sep 1854, and Lavinia in Bromsgrove, Jun 1870. Hi Jim, You don't say where or when you are looking. Generally, Littleton/Lyttleton pops up in Halgey over a few centuries and in 16th century Frankley. I'm also fairly certain that the names pops up in Warwickshire, possibly associated with Throgmorton. I have a personal interest too. In 1831, George HANDS was born in Kings Norton. (One of 11 children to Benjamin HANDS.) I have found out very little about George, a commercial traveller. He is buried with my lot in St. Nicolas churchyard, Kings Norton. He died in 1876. The MI says he was from The Heath, Stourport. Buried in the same grave, in 1885, was his eldest son George Lyttleton HANDS. I haven't yet tried to find the marriage, other than FreeBMD and my normal trawling. However there are no Littleton/Lyttleton anywhere else in the known tree. There are 3 LITTLETON marriages on FreeBMD between 1837 and 1881 in Worcestershire, but no LYTTLETONs. Get back if this means anything to you. -- Mike Yegwart Branch Chairman Bromsgrove BMSGH http://www.bromsgrovebmsgh.co.uk
Hi Jim, the only Lyttletons were the Lords of the Manor at Hagley. Peer of the Realm and Lord Lieutenant of the County. This is the only spelling of the name I could find on the 1851 Census, whether a similar name was around at another date I couldn't say, certainly something there for you to look into. Best Wishes from Linda.
Hi List, I have just been told that the 1841 census isn't indexed. Please excuse my ignorance ! Every day in every way a little wiser I shall be . Hi List, After all the help I was given about my BUNN family on the 1851census ( especially Malcolm Platt -Grigg ) I feel a bit cheeky asking for help so soon. But nothing ventured nothing gained. :-) Has SKS got a copy of the 1841 census. I would like to find the family of Father THOMAS BUNN b ? Labourer wife ? son FREDERICK BUNN b 1826 Berrow. Carpenter I 'm not sure what part of Worcershire they will be living. Thanks for any help Kathy BUNN.MERRICK Worcester.
Hi All I just joined the list. I am researching Littleton/Lyttleton surname. Any help would be appreciated. JIM
Hi Helen "(The) Cliff is an old road south of the River Stour leading from the Eastern end of Mill Street to the Eastern end of Coventry Street. It is named on the 1837 map and shown as continuing from the Coventry Street junction as Lower Lane." This is from the book written by H Jack Haden about the street names of Stourbridge. Velda

Hello All, Just a quick note to tell everyone that 40 new photos of graves for Bromsgrove have been added today. Quite a lot of them date back to the 1700s so may prove useful. Also I have now added a wiki to the site. It is available for anyone to enter information in or edit any info already added. You can also add photos. The wiki is on a server with unlimited disk space so there is no end to the info we could all add. It could become a really useful resource if everyone adds a small amount (or large!) of info. I'll add some info I have on people and places over the next few days to get it started. I have also added some snippets from the Worcester Journal which date back to the 1700s but are mainly from 1803 and 1903 at the moment. Items cover all sorts from Storms and highwaymen to murder and theft. There are some funny ones too e.g.. the Master of Droitwich Workhouse who boiled down lard in the bedpans! Good Hunting and hope you enjoy the new stuff. Sally
Dear Helen, -----Original Message-----is anyone aware of the address "Cliff " in Stourbridge. If so I would love to find out which parish in Stourbridge it may come under----- Yes, The Cliff is in the current A-Z and I recall having seen it, but I couldn't find it it on the map - must be very small or I need a better magnifying glass. Anyway, its somewhere in or very near the town centre. Probably Old Swinford Parish is the first place to look. Nigel Brown ENG-WOR-CRADLEY@rootsweb.com

Many years ago I found the following on the Worcestershire 1881 census fiche: 13 Canal Side E, Oldbury, Worcestershire: Name Age Birthplace Relationship Occupation Thomas Sands 47 Quina Brook, Shropshire, England Head Carrier Sarah Sands 43 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Wife Hannah Sands 17 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Daughter Thomas Sands 16 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Sarah Sands 11 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Daughter Samuel Sands 9 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Son John Sands 7 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Son James Sands 5 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Son Mary Sands 3 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Daughter Hannah Brane 23 Oldbury, Worcestershire, England Daughter James Brane 28 Millfield, Staffordshire, England Son in Law Boatman Not sure why two daughters both called Hannah. Although I am not descended from any of them, we do all share common ancestors. Could sks with access to the 1891 and 1901 censuses find out if they were still there, please? I would also be very pleased to hear from anyone who has them on their tree or knows anything about them or their descendants. Working "upwards" I hit a brick wall around 1700 some 25 years or more ago so I am now trying to work "downwards" which is much more difficult! It is only through the power of the internet and marvellous people such as those on this list that I stand a chance! Many thanks John
Dear All This is a long shot - is anyone aware of the address "Cliff " in Stourbridge. If so I would love to find out which parish in Stourbridge it may come under please. I have a birth cert for Joseph Birt address 21 Cliff Stourbridge in 1860/ The family had moved by 1861 and but am trying to find out who was living in this area on the 1861 census as it may enable me to find other extended family or possible friends. Joseph father was a well travelled plasterer so maybe it was just a lodgings for them . The address existed in 1881 and 1901 and am sure it is on the present A/Z In anticipation!! Helen

Hi again Kathy, My apologies but I missed another entry for Frederick Bunn. He's 24, born Berrow, farm labourer, living with James & Elizabeth Davis (he's their brother-in-law). There's also a Caroline Bunn there, age 7, visitor. They're at Whiteleaf Oak, Berrow. Regards from Malcolm Platt-Grigg. Hi Kathy, The closest I could find on the Worcs 1851 is a Frederick Bunn, aged 24, born Worcester, brick layer's labourer, living in Great Malvern. He's a lodger with John & Isabella Gunnell.
