    1. Lookup please 1861 census - PORTMAN/JONES
    2. Roger Jones
    3. I have Milbro (Milborough) PORTMAN widow, living in Sandlin, Leigh on the 1851 census with Henry son age 25 shoemaker Elizabeth dau age 22 glover Susan JONES Lodger (actually daughter, Susannah PORTMAN) 28 Glover Charles JONES Lodger(Susan’s son) 8 Scholar John JONES lodger (Susan’s son) 3 Scholar Susan’s husband Peter JONES emigrated to America following his conversion to Mormonism in 1844. Susan would not go with him so they were divorced (info from a letter transcript) Charles is Peter’s child, John is not. Are they on the 1861 or later censuses in Alfrick, Leigh or surrounding area. I’m interested in Charles to see whether his descendants survive today. I have a great deal of information I acquired from Peter’s Mormon descendants whom I met on a recent trip to Utah. I found a Charles Jones marriage on FreeBMD for Mar 1866 Martley 6c 273, but don’t know if it’s the same Charles. Any assistance much appreciated. Hi All read this on another list Mike in Droitwich On a (sort of) related subject I recently found my local library offers free access to Ancestry (and some other subscription services), I gather 10 libraries in Hertfordshire have the free access and some other counties are offering similar arrangements. Maybury " Old Farrier's Arms" Henry Mansell S Hulland Ann Hulland S Grove " Severn Trow" James Cullis Luke P Maybury " Old Wherry" H Leyland J & J Badham T Stalworth " Queen Caroline" T Taylor A Latham John Griffiths. BTW, if any of your are looking for Canadian information, our 1911 census was released recently, after a special act of Parliment (under the 1905 Census Act there was no provision for future release) our census information will be released after 92 years. (although starting with 2006 census, there will be a box or something to check off, to prevent ANY future release of your data ... oh well, something to worry about in 2098). http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1911/index-e.html Nick

    3. Hello Graham, You've various avenues here from what's held at Worcester History Centre. Eckington's Parish Records Wills Indexes Censuses 1841-1901 Worcestershire Marriages Index [I don't recognise the 'Edwardian Index'] In passing, John Sr was still alive in 1851, aged 63, still in Eckington (where he said he was born), a widower, Registrar of Births and Deaths and Relieving Officer, and recorded with 3 teenage daughters - [HO107/2045/62/141 Index No 210660]. No likely candidate for John Jr, though - who at ~24 might well already have left for Australia. (Gold Rush??) Can't answer your query about Registrars - but he would only have taken that post (at the earliest) in 1837, when Registration was introduced. HTH for starters... 3. Hi John, Quay Street was definitely in existence in 1841 - it's named as such on an 1835 map I've got - and is almost certainly far older than that. It runs due South from the front of All Saints Church to [now South, was then just 'plain.] Quay. Neighbouring streets would be Bridge Street and Hood Street [very short] plus possibly Hares [and/or Hounds] Lane(s) and Warmstry Slip.
