Hi Ruth The first thing you should do is write to Origins and explain the problem: they will probably extend your membership. I had a similar problem with accessing persons from Worcestershire and discovered that it was probably because "Worcestershire" in the list of counties of birth was misspelt, so that their search engine was not recognising it. (It has since been corrected). Secondly, you do not need to specify a county of birth when searching the 1841 Census, as counties of birth were not specifically mentioned in the Census; if you leave that box blank you will get a better return. Hope this helps, With best wishes from Sydney, Australia Keith Houghton

Within the past couple of months I KNOW ! came across a reference 'somewhere' concerning "Barge Registration Numbers" - that they were some sort of 'Public Health Registers' set up around the 1880s that permitted Local Authorities to inspect - and trace if necessary - any inland-waterway Trading Vessels to ensure compliance with the then-equivalent of Health & Safety Regulations. [This came as news to me, as I'd always believed them to be more the equivalent of Annual Licences.] "They are held in the Birmingham archives up the spiral staircase."

Hello Iain, This, I regret, is not going to be anywhere near as Useful as I would've hoped, because it's shown up a Sad Failing in my note-taking and referencing... [This came as news to me, as I'd always believed them to be more the equivalent of Annual Licences.] I had Honest Intentions of both recording and following this up - but if I did, I can no longer trace the Source (and I *know* I didn't follow it up!) BUT... The Waterways Archive/Museum at Gloucester Docks may well be able to tell you what may have survived, and where it may be accessed. Sorry it's so scrappy, but it MAY lead you where you want to go! Gus PS If there's anyone else Out There with knowledge of these arcane matters I'd be grateful to be kept informed :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: Iain Shaw <Iain.Shaw@nuigalway.ie> To: <ENG-WORCESTER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 13, 2005 11:03 AM Subject: [WOR] Barge registers > Dear list, > > I have several relatives (Footman family) that were working and living on > barges in the 1870s - 1890s. Grateful thanks to the kindness of listers, I have the information I was looking for. I now want to learn a little more about this place Cleeve Prior, as I like to know the history of the villages my people came from. Could someone with knowledge of the area please point me to a good website please that would be useful . Hello all, Seeking the marriage of Charles HALL b 1872 Astley, Worcestershire to Marian ?? b 1870 Stourport, Worcestershire. They are on the 1901 census in Cholmondeley, Cheshire. They are listed as Married but cannot find a marriage. His occupation is listed as Coachman, Marian does not have an occupation listed which is strange as she would most probably be working at the castle. They are listed as living in the stables of Cholmondeley Castle. On 1891 census Charles is 20 and single working as a groom/domestic servant with the FREEMAN family of Waresley, Hartlebury, Worcestershire. Any help gratefully received. Mike.
Hi All Would any of the listers have a list of the vicars of Rock church between 1790 and 1850 Thanks Mike

Dear list, I have several relatives (Footman family) that were working and living on barges in the 1870s - 1890s. A lot of their activity appears to be centered around Hanbury Wharf and Tibberton. I just wondered if anyone was aware if any of the record offices or history societies have such a thing as registers of boat owners and or registers/histories of barges. I have the names of barges that these people lived on and would be interetsed to see if they just rented these (could one do such a thing) or actually owned them, and also what was the fate of these barges. Many thanks, Iain Dr Iain Shaw Immunodiagnostics Laboratory National Diagnostics Centre National University of Ireland Galway Ireland Tel: 00353 91 492090 Fax: 00353 91 586570 email: iain.shaw@nuigalway.ie
The Registers of: Evesham All Saints; Evesham St Lawrence; and Bengeworth (the part of the borough on the Other Side of the Avon) are all complete, and are held on film at Worcester History Centre. None - as far as I know - have been extracted to the IGI; and not all have been filmed by the LDS. It would seem that those not filmed by the LDS are ONLY available at WorcHistCent. But I'd like to be proved wrong.....
