I don't know which resource you are using for the 1901 but if you can do so, try searching on Alice (no surname), 43 and Bristol to see if that will find her. Gartonia is liable to be hopelessly mistranscribed. Otherwise have a look on www.freebmd.org.uk or www.familyrelatives.com for their deaths between 1891 and 1901. Familyrelatives is indexed to 1920.

    3. Hello Roy, A date and a source just might help here... But Merryvale is now the northern end of Deansway - it ran South from the junction of Broad and Bridge Streets to (roughly) the northern end of St Andrews former graveyard. I don't know when it was (officially) renamed, but it was certainly still referred to by the Old Name in the mid-1950s. Can't help on The Pinch, though - that's one I've never heard of! 1. Re: [WOR] William GARLAND
    2. Gus Tysoe
    3. Hello Terry, In 1841 there was a William GARLAND, "60", Mayor's Officer, born in County recorded in Frog Lane [now Severn Street] Worcester St Peter, [HO107/1209/17; Fo 7; p6] Also in the household were: Ann GARLAND, "60", not born in County Maria GARLAND, "30", born in County In 1851 - in Diglis Street, Worcester St Peter [HO107/2042; Fo 829; Sch 110] William GARLAND, Head, "M", 77, M, Retired Mayor's Officer; Worcester Maria GARLAND, Dau, U, 45, F, -, Worcester St Martin This was about "a couple of doors down" from the far end of Turners Buildings, where Samuel was innkeeper of The Shades. I couldn't find Ann, who *may* have died at some stage after the 1841, despite William being shown as "married". In 1841, Samuel, 23 [with wife Mary, 21 and son George, 1month] was recorded "at" an unnamed Pub in Friar Street, Worcester St Helen. [HO107/1209/9; Fo 23; p26] No occupation is given for him or Mary, but their names immediately follow that of the Landlord, George WORMINGTON, "55". The presumption has to be that they were live-in bar staff. *IF* William's age was correctly given in the 1851, he'd've been born c.1773-74 [quite a bit earlier than your estimate] - and if his birthplace is correct then the absence of his, Maria's and Samuel's baptisms from the IGI would imply that he was a Nonconformist of some denomination. I *suspect* that he could well have married Ann HOLDER at Lydney, GLS on 15 May 1804 - this at least would fit with her having been born "out of County" - but you'd need to see the Parish Register entry for additional information. 3. Hi Roy, Merry Vale (Merrivale) was in St Andrews. It's still on a 1960s map that I have, joining Broad Street where it meets All Hallows, so it's just across the river from St Johns. My Hale family ran the Glovers' Arms pub where Merryvale met Powick Lane, and the address varied according to which census it was on. 1. Re: [WOR] Fw: Fw: Place name Caston Hackett
    2. Gus Tysoe
    3. Hi Steve, I've been away for the week and have only just seen your Monday's posting... The change from Cofton to Coston throughout most C19 could well have been the result of a continually-repeated mistranscription, but certainly at the time of the 1851 Census (which was the origination of this exchange) it was clearly in general use as Coston, for that was - with a potential mistranscription by the enquirer, for Ancestry index it as Coston, not Caston - how it was recorded by the enumerator. [HO107/2047/317/19 (and 17)]. It is *possible* that the change may have been made following the early-1880s Public Consultations over the Parish Boundaries prior to the issue of the OS 1st Edition 6" and 25" Series - but that it took a little time for Official Recognition to be granted. Although at this stage this can be little more than a guess. Gus ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Cullen" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 29, 2007 11:42 AM Subject: [WOR] Fw: Fw: Place name Caston Hackett There are historical documents relating to Cofton Hall, which was situated at Cofton Hackett, as early as 1621 so I think "Cofton" dates much further back than census days. I'm still pretty certain "Coston" was never more than a mistranscription as I haven't come across it in any historical document other than 19th century civil records.
