There were no marriage certifcates at that time. Typically, just the name of the bride and the groom with the date, whether it was by banns or licence and the names of the witnesses and that was it, no occupations, no fathers names or occupations, as per the following example: The Revd Christopher Whitehead of Bolton in the County Palatine of Lancaster and Mary Baily otp Married 28 January 1784 by Licence Wit: Frances Baily, William House <all parties signed> paid 3d The 3d was a tax that had to be paid on all baptisms, burials and marriages. It lasted for about 10 years. The very poor were exempt.

    1. [WOR] Loose end - Adelaide Sarah Heriot Figes - b Worcester 1832
    2. johnlake
    3. I am going to try again to resolve a huge loose end. I am trying to find out anything about Adelaide Sarah Heriot Figes b in Worcester in 1832. She married Samuel Lake in 1849. From her marriage Cert her father was Francis Figes. I am completely stuck here and thought maybe just maybe this group could help. Gus has already been to the local records office and was not able to come up with any Adelaide Sarah Heriot Figes or any Francis Figes for that matter. She was on the stage later in life and so was her father - so I am concerned she was just transient in Worcester and maybe didn't register her birth. Anyone tracking this name or anyone have any wonderful ideas. Thanks

    3. Hi Listers Well, one thing's for sure. I'm glad I'm getting my sleep in the C21. Information from Gus and John about bedlinen made from nettles and oakum does not appeal at all. Maybe there was a sliding scale in the 1500s, your popularity as a guest ensuring (or not) that you had the least scratchy sheets. I'm grateful for Gus and John's replies. Kind regards Joy

    3. Hi John, So hurden's lowest-quality, then (as I'd rather suspected). "Oakum" it is, then. And "Picking Oakum" being a Naval punishment, producing (with a fair amount of effort) a crude sort of packing-material "fray" out of Old Rope. I'd've not thought it'd've been all that readily spinnable into any sort of Yarn - but then our Ancestors were pretty good at "Making Do and Mending".... FAR - far - better than their descendants at "recycling"!
