Hi Mike, Thanks for the suggestions Allen
Hi Allen, Just to add to your misery. Some directories simply plagiarised the work of other directories. So, as an example, suppose the "accurate one" was one to two years in preparation another couple could be added for to the "copy" directory. So try another directory, for example "The Post Office Directory". As for finding the family. Have you tried the IGI, although coverage is getting a bit thin by this time? National Burial Index is worth a go too. Do you know which cemetery any of the family may be be buried in? A Monumental Inscription (MI) may help. If Albert was alive after about 1915 he may be on an electoral register, which may be more up to date than a directory. Mike Allen Cook wrote: > Hi, Thanks both for your help. Hi John, You seem to have the bug! Thanks for your help. The 1901 census is as follows 1901 Census Rg 13/2840 Folio 129 page 26 14 Court 3 Frankfort Street Albert Davis Head, Age 24 Pearl Button Cutter Born Birmingham Warwicks Alice Davis wife Age 26 Press Worker Born Birmingham Warwicks Alice Davis Daughter age 1 born Birmingham Warwicks This is definitely them because of the daughter Alice. I have her wedding and Birth certificate. However I believe Albert and Alice's ages have been swapped! Alice was 69 in 1946 when she died. This would make her 24 in 1901. and possibly Albert died in 1937 age 63 which would make him 26/7 in 1901. Therefore in 1891 Alice would have been 14 and Albert would have been 16 which rules out both people that you found. Also according to the original image of the 1901 all the people on the page were Ditto'd. I've come across this a couple of times now where the enumerator got it wrong and they were born elsewhere, the possibility of which opens up a possible can of worms. The Albert Edward comes from the birth certificate of one of their four children. He registered the birth and got his name right. Everywhere else Alice seems to have been in control and misses out Edward, which would have been the same on his death registration. I'm sorry I'm rambling on too much but any further help or suggestions I would be most grateful for. Regards Allen
Ah !!!! Hello Allen: You said in this message to John "The Albert Edward comes from the birth certificate of one of their four children. He registered the birth and got his name right." One never knows what clues can be picked up; could you post all the children's details, names, places of births, etc etc. to the list. Could possibly help the searching ! Plus, do not assume the marriage was "before" wee Alice was born. Barb, Ontario, Canada.

Hi, Thanks both for your help. I know the forum is for Worcs but Albert Edward Davis lived in Birmingham. The shop was 23, Proctor Street. I am looking for his death certificate at the moment. Hopefully this will lead to his birth certificate. They are on the 1901 census living in Frankfort Street. But on ancestry their name has been transcribed as Albert Doris! That took some finding! I am very suspect of their dates of birth recorded on the census. I have been unable to trace Albert and Alice's wedding certificate. Presumably in the late 1890's Her maiden name is Alice Barton. I cannot find either on the 1891 or 1881 census returns. There are plenty of Albert's on both census' but which one he is I don't know. I have no father's or mother's names either! I have searched all the local parish records for the Newtown and all central areas of Birmingham. I have studied the BMD and free BMD registers for hours but to no avail. Should I slit my throat? There must be something I've missed surely? Regards Allen
I had a similar situation in Lancashire. I *knew* that the head of the family business died Dec 1834 but he was still listed in the trade directory in 1836. When I asked on the Lancashire forum, I was told that compilation could take 12-18 months and, unless someone remembered to tell them, the listing wouldn't amended before going to print. I just made a note of the error in the notes section of both the deceased head of the business and the son who had taken over by the time the directory was printed. By the way, I don't think that there is a hard and fast period of time that each directory/issue covers. I was led to believe that it was used until the next issue was printed. Hope this helps Heather Q Allen Cook wrote: > Can anyone tell me when the closing date for copy is for entry in the > following years Kelly's. i.e.. would the Kelly's 1937 have lasted from > January 1937 until December 1937 and if so would copy have to be provided > before what date (say September, October or November 1936)? Hi, This is my first post. My ancestor Albert Davis was a shopkeeper and he is listed in Kelly's between 1916 and 1936. In 1937 his wife takes over and is listed until her death in 1946. Can anyone tell me when the closing date for copy is for entry in the following years Kelly's. i.e.. would the Kelly's 1937 have lasted from January 1937 until December 1937 and if so would copy have to be provided before what date (say September, October or November 1936)? If not how would it have been compiled? I am convinced Albert died in 1936 before Kelly's was prepared but with so many Albert Davis' registered for 1935, 36, 37, it is virtually impossible to pick which one. Any suggestions at all would be helpful. Regards Allen Cook
Hello to everyone, Looking for connections to BIRD and CARELEFS, CARELESS...one time spelt Cayless which I found on a 1876 birth registry. My 3rd Gr. grandparents: Joseph BIRD B. In the 1871 census there were three boarders: Robert WARD (age 18) b.abt.1853 Oldbury, Stafford. Benjamin ASTIN (age 21) b.abt. 1850 Oldbury, Stafford. Frances FARREL or FARNELL (age 56) b.abt. 1815 Ireland. All were coal Miners. I also am hoping someone can help explain the changes in districts. I get so confused when asking for help and taking the info from the 1841 to 1871 census. The change over from Worcester to Stafford. What infomation does one give out when researching? Very confusing. Thank you all for taking the time to read my message. Would appreciate any information. Regards, Sherri BC Canada _________________________________________________________________

I'm coming back into the loop after an absence of several years because I have come up against a 'Stone' wall! I am researching the Stone family (-ies) of Bushley. I had believed the Robert Stone, who settled there after he married Elizabeth George at Bushley in 1775, was the first of the 5 generations of Bushley Stones in my ancestry but I have since found others who pre-date his arrival. Mary, daughter of Francis and Ann Stone, was christened at Bushley on 13 August, 1721, many years before Robert's arrival. I cannot find any trace of Francis and Ann in Worcestershire but, as Bushley is only a Stone's throw from the River Severn, they may have been blow-ins from Gloucestershire. I know that there was a clutch of Stones at Deerhurst, only about 9 miles away across the border. Does anyone have any information on a possible connection? Hi Mike, I'm sorry, I didn't make it clear, but it was an email sent to me privately that for some reason landed in my spam folder. As the LINGEN-GOMERY connection is a Worcestershire one I thought I'd see if the sender was subscribed to the list - a long shot, as I said. -- Best regards, Linda Hansen Researching GOMERY/GOMORY/GOMORI and GUMERY/GUMMERE/GUMMERY worldwide.
