    2. Erin Flory
    3. I agree Malcolm. I've just sent off a kit to check my mitochondrial DNA and I've also ordered a kit for testing Y-DNA for one of the last direct male descendents of our Izett family. One of the reasons I chose to test for the Y-DNA is that I've heard a variety of stories about the origin of the Izett name. Some claim a middle east origin and some claim that it is a form of Isolda as of Tristan and Isolda. We've traced our branch back to 1800 in Glasgow but would like to know if there is any truth to the middle east origins. This seems the one way to see if it is true. DNA testing will not replace good old genealogical research, and who would want it to, but it may give us more information and clues about our past and where to look next for more clues. My Worcs families are Pye, Crump, and Gowen/Gowan from the Bewdley region. I, for one, think this is fascinating technology albeit in it's infancy. As the database grows, it will become a valuable tool in genealogy. I've had my DNA tested and added to the database and hope one day it will help with my research. It may take 5,10 or 20 years but I can wait. Just my 2 cents worth. Malcolm. 3. FWIW, as far as I can see all it actually determines (in exchange, of course, for Money) is that we all have Ancestors who could've come from anywhere.... Just what sort of DNA are they testing anyway? It looks to be mitochondrial, which relates only to your direct female descent - something that's less-than-traditional in 'normal' Family History. Great if you've actually GOT your (warranted) 7G-gfthr's mummified corpse under your bed and can have it tested to get "real" Real Ancestral DNA to compare to yours. But who knows what 5G-gmthr might've got up to? Gus

    3. Hi, For anyone who has, or is thinking of, getting their DNA tested there is a project which may interest them. It is called the British Isles DNA Project and its main aims are "to assemble a detailed haplogroup map of the British Isles by county, corresponding to the DNA profile of the region's early history and settlement." I interpret this as trying to establish whether the "gene pools" of counties can be identified. Worcs surnames listed are:- BADSON BLOUNT GADD HARRIS MASON The project's address is http://www.britishislesdna.com/index.htm I hope this is of interest and that some of you consider adding your results to this study so that we can get a better picture of the county's genes. :-) _________________________________________________________________ Win 100’s of Virgin Experience days with BigSnapSearch.com http://www.bigsnapsearch.com

    2. Arthur Lewis
    3. April 2008 Meeting A talk on "DNA in Family History" is to be given by Richard Phillips at the April meeting of the Worcester Branch of the Birmingham & Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry. Richard will give a personal view of taking part in an international DNA study. He will describe how DNA techniques can be used to corroborate or expand family trees. The science is still young but very interesting results are already being achieved. Our bookstall will as usual be in the capable hands of our librarian, Peter Taylor. The meeting, at the Baptist Church Hall in Sansome Walk, Worcester, will be on Friday, 11th April, starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome to attend. Further details may be found at www.worcesterbmsgh.co.uk. Arthur Lewis

    3. Listers - I feel the jury's still out on DNA. I can go back to the mid 1700's with my father's and mother's side. But they are only two of many ggg grandfather and grandmother's, I haven't yet traced. So did the ones, I haven't traced yet, live in the same county, or even country. At present, I live in the USA, and some of the TV programs have tested out several of the companies who are in this "business". Everyone seems to be related to at least one President, and/or a film star. Many "African Americans" are being pitched to, as a means of finding their African heritage. But the one study had two different companies trace a lady's DNA. One company traced her ancestors to W. Africa, while the other had her ancestors coming from S.E Africa. Apparently, these companies only have a fraction of a % of the gene pool to work from. I wonder if any like this has happened in the UK, with W. Indian imigrants? 3. Hi all I am new to your list and am trying to find out about an early family in my line. His name is Robert Luddington and I am sure he was born in Tenbury Wells, in 1663, as far as I can make out son of Samuel Luddington. Robert got a B A from oxford. He was married in All Saints, Worcester in 1696, and went on to become vicar in chelmarsh, Shropshire in 1700. I have his family baptised there, except I think his first son Robert. I am hoping that someone might have a little bit of information on them in there study's? Thank you for your time. 3. Thanks Kay. Yes I have looked at marriages and can find nothing definite that fits in the 1891 or the 1901 census. I have even looked at Ellis Island and Castle Garden! There is little mention of her in the family. Her parents brought up her son who was born in Dorset in 1868. Only one family document mentions her and that as Bessie and I have looked at that name too. That document is a little confused. Also of course I have looked at other derivations of Elizabeth and her second name Mary. Should not have thought she would use her third name of Cox as her first name, but tried it! There is considerable interest in the family as to what happened to this elusive ancestor and having tracked her from birth to 1881 I would love to know what happened to her. Very best wishes to all Mary On 29/03/2008, [email protected] < [email protected]> wrote: > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. Dear All Any help gratefully received in my quest to find either the marriage or death record of ALICE JAUNCEY. She was born as one of triplets to George and Ann Jauncey at Leigh, Worcestershire in 1862. In 1889 Ann gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Ann Matilda Jauncey. My last record of Alice is the 1891 census, where she was living with her sister Sophia Catherine Winters in Munsley, Herefordshire. I can find no trace of Alice Jauncey in the 1901 census, although her daughter was by this time living with her grandmother back in Leigh. >From this, I am assuming that Alice either died or got married between 1891 and 1901, but I can find no trace of either. Any suggestions? Thanks. Greg

    1. [WOR] William BRIGHT
    2. Good morning all. My first direct enquiry although I've looked and listened with interest over the years. My research has taken in the Forest of Dean, most of south Wales and into the west country mainly Somerset, together with a little bit of Australia. Background. I've been very lucky to trace some lines as far back as the late 1500s. Right now I'm stuck at gt grandfather x 3 William BRIGHT who according to a Carmarthenshire census was born in 1790 but we know not where at the moment. All I have is that John Bright, my gt x 2 grandfather, was born in the Forest of Dean at Westbury and was the first born to William and Sarah BRIGHT in 1812/13. The whole family moved into south Wales and William and Sarah eventually settled and died in Carmarthenshire - William in Carmarthen and Sarah in Kidwelly with quite a few Bright's around her. There are a few clues which suggest that there might well be a connection with the Hartlebury and Ombersley/Kidderminster/Droitwich areas of Worcestershire. Clue 1 is that John and Miriam Bright moved away from Glamorganshire in the mid 1840s probably driven away by the loss of their first two children to Cholera or something similar. They went to Hartlebury where Sarah my gt grandmother was born in 1850. The family eventually settled in Kidwelly. Clue 2 is that Sarah Luisa Bright married Benjamin Southall in 1871 in Kidwelly and after some wanderings in the Black country and north Warwickshire, eventually settled back in Worcester in Bridge Street, Stourport as confectioners. Clue 3 is that Mary Louis Southall, my grandmother, following teacher training in Warwickshire, returned to marry in the same area at Upper Mitton Baptist Chapel in 1906. Something seems to have drawn all of them back to the Droitwich area of Worcestershire and I wonder if this is where William Bright and his family had their roots.. The other clue I have comes from family search.org where they have on record a William Bright, christened 25 December 1790, Kiddermister, Worcester to parents - another William Bright and Sarah. He would fit the bill nicely if we could make the connection. If anyone is able to help me expand on that last clue, or can offer any other suggestions, I would be very grateful. Happy hunting.
