Did the 1861 census list the names and ages of his sisters? Do you know what a Boy 1st Class duties on a steamer would be? Was it part of the Royal Navy or just like a Merchant Marine? Does anyone out there know what kind of a neighborhood MORTIMORE ST. in Trowbridge would have been like in the mid 1800? I'm building a profile on my G-Grandfather. So far I like him. Kind of romantic, running off to sea. I found the father, William Vennell on the 1881 census. He was living with his daughter, Leah (Vennell) Hewett and her husband James Hewett. William was listed as a pauper. I also found that he died that same year, 1881. That's the same year we find my John H. came to America. The plot thickens! I discovered his g-grandmother, RUTH VENNELL, b. 1847 in Trowbridge d. 1927 USA / Parents William and Eliza (Purnell) Vennell Now here is where it gets interesting: My g-grandfather, John Henry Vennell, b 1854 in Trowbridge d. 1904 USA / Parents William and Eliza (Purnell) Vennell Ruth Vennell married in 1870 to William RANDALL (b. 1845 in Trowbridge d. 1920 USA) Came to USA in 1893 Ruth came 1895 John Henry Vennell served in the Royal Navy (1881 census) came to USA about 1890's or earlier. Any information on other siblings? William Vennell b. 1837 came to USA with family in the 1880's Leah Vennell b. 1841 Married James HEWETT Rhoda Vennell This is all the information I have. I'd like to get a feel on how they lived, occupations, neighborhood, religion. I'd like to make more connections with the VENNELL, RANDALL, LONG and HEWETT. I have lived in Maine, USA all my life. My husband and I have been married for 35 yrs and have two "perfect" sons and a wonderful grand-daughter, 3yrs. I love finding out about our English families. I'm hoping to make some Trowbridge connection.
