Judy; I dug around on Ancestry.com and picked up the info below. It looks like your John. There is more information available on ancestry.com, but I ran out of lunch time. Cheers Keith Passenger list Assyrian Monarch departed London, England arrived New York, NY 28 Nov 1881 John H. Vennell age 29 place of origin England 1890 Providence, Rhode Island directory: John H. Vennell, 33 Henrietta, occupation: Weaver 1900 Census: Sanford, Maine John ? Vennell b. Dec 1859 England immigrated 1890 occupation weaver married 16 years (i.e. married 1884) Martha wife b. Feb 1888 Rhode Island parents born England John son b. Sep 1890 Rhode Island parents born England Lily Daug b. May 1893 Maine parents born England The year is off for John, 1859 instead of 1854. The census shows that they both emmigrated in 1890. This does not seem to make sense since Nellie was born in Rhode Island in 1884. The 1920 Census shows that Martha immigrated in 1890, but was naturalized in 1885. It sure looks like 1890 and not 1880 but it could be the scan. His son had to fill out a WWI draft card: Draft registration John Henry Vennell, born Providence, Rhode Island September 1, 1890. Residence 18 Winter, Sanford, Maine. He is a weaver at Goodall Worsted Plant in Sanford, Maine. He is single and he is the sole support of his mother. He claims draft excemption because he has to support his widowed mother. He is short, slender, Blue eyes, dark brown hair. It is signed June 5, 1917. Apparently the exemption was denied, he is listed in "Maine Military Men 1917-1918" Name: John H. We now have expanded our family by finding cousins in Yorkshire Eng. and Australia under our HOWGATE name. It is time now for me to search out my VENNELL family. While researching my husband's people I found he also has a VENNELL connection. I was totally blown away! I discovered his g-grandmother, RUTH VENNELL, b. 1847 in Trowbridge d. 1927 USA / Parents William and Eliza (Purnell) Vennell Now here is where it gets interesting: My g-grandfather, John Henry Vennell, b 1854 in Trowbridge d. 1904 USA / Parents William and Eliza (Purnell) Vennell Ruth Vennell married in 1870 to William RANDALL (b. 1845 in Trowbridge d. 1920 USA) Came to USA in 1893 Ruth came 1895 John Henry Vennell served in the Royal Navy (1881 census) came to USA about 1890's or earlier. He married Martha Long in the USA. b.1856 Eng. d. 1931 USA What I would like to find is when John Henry Vennell came to America. Can he be found on British census after 1881. Any information on other siblings? William Vennell b. 1837 came to USA with family in the 1880's Leah Vennell b. 1841 Married James HEWETT Rhoda Vennell This is all the information I have. I'd like to get a feel on how they lived, occupations, neighborhood, religion. I'd like to make more connections with the VENNELL, RANDALL, LONG and HEWETT. I have lived in Maine, USA all my life. My husband and I have been married for 35 yrs and have two "perfect" sons and a wonderful grand-daughter, 3yrs. I love finding out about our English families. I'm hoping to make some Trowbridge connection.
