Can anyone tell me where it > is and what the district did/does? Norton is about 3 miles southwest of Malmesbury. According to the Victoria County History "Coleparle" is an error for Cole Park, and the error was begun unwittingly by John Speed in 1611, when he marked the word "Coleparke" on his map right after "Norton" for the parish so that they looked like one phrase. Norton is agricultural, but Malmesbury is the market town for the region, and also had cloth mills. These had all fallen out of use by the mid-18th century, but according to the VCH: "The woollen industry was revived c1790 when Francis Hill bought Cannop's Mill and built a new cloth mill, Burton Hill Mill, on its site. Hill chose Malmesbury, away from existing area of cloth production, so that he could install modern machinery without opposition." In the later 19th century censuses some of the female members of my family were listed as silk weavers. The mill was in an imposing building at the bottom of the town, still a local landmark. It was closed in 1950, but since then I can personally remember seeing an antique dealer in the building. It has now been converted into apartments.
