Just another tiny thought... If both brothers were carpenters, there's an excellent chance their father and other relatives were as well. This is the case with my family, where I have five generations of carpenters in England going back to where I lose the records. Most generations had two or three of the sons carpenters, and the daughters also marrying them. The siblings who were not carpenters were complementary trades such as blacksmiths/wheelwrights in the 18th century and then plasterers and painters in the 19th century. A very tightly knit community within their community! It may be worth looking by trade in the later censuses to get an idea of families of carpenter ADLAM's, then following them back to see if there was a sibling John.
