    3. Hi, In the 1901 census I have found a family in Calne Without whose children all have the birthplace "labour in vain". Would anyone have any idea if this is a real place (maybe a farm or the name of the workhouse?) or if it was a special notation that meant something to the enumerators. Thanks for any guidance on this one. Bob

    3. Hi Bob There is a "Labour in Vain Hill" on the Old Bath Road (A4), at the village of Cherhill near Calne. I reckon that will be it. (There may well be a farm of the same name). 3. Thanks Adrian, I assume that there must have been cottages or something (in a very small hamlet?) on the road that they were refering to as I've found others in the same area (Calne Without) who were also born in Labour in Vain. (I think the name's quite funny when associated with childbirth, although it would have been no joke in those days.) Unfortunately I can't find anything on the 1899 map apart from the road itself that carries that name. Thanks again to Adrian & Dave, Bob -----Original Message----- From: adrianp7@tiscali.co.uk [mailto:adrianp7@tiscali.co.uk] Sent: October 2, 2006 12:14 AM To: sacbob@yahoo.com; eng-wiltshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] "Labour in vain" Hello Bob Labour in Vain Hill is on the A4 near Cherhill which is to the east of Calne.
