    3. Dear All I wonder if the list has any members with a knowledge of the following place. On the 1871 census, I have found what appears to be one of my GRAY ancestors. The census ref is RG10/1949 page 24 His name is WILLIAM GRAY aged 18 and living as the head with his siblings, Mother LOUISA (MOODY) died in 1865 and I think the father was in Jail. The address looks like CHALK GUTTER, whereas many of the other address'a are down as REDLYNCH. Whilst on holiday in Bournemouth this year, I paid a vist to DOWNTON/REDLYNCH and would love to know if any one knows where CHALK GUTTER is/Might have been. Many Thanks Paul Gray Cheshire

    3. Hello Paul I've had a look at the image and there appears to be a small letter after the k in Chalk. On the previous page this looks like a small d but raised above the line of the other letters to suggest that the word has been shortened to Chalk'd Gutter. If you go to the website http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ And enter Downton or Redlynch. When the map comes up enlarge it til you are seeing street names. Maybe if you work your way around the map you might find it You could of course, as you are in England, telephone the Downton Post Office on 01725 512565, or write to them at: Downton Sub Post Office, 30 High Street, Downton, Salisbury, Wilts Good luck with your search Dot, In Salisbury, Wilts On 5/10/06 20:54, "Pam and Paul Gray" <pam@grayfam.wanadoo.co.uk> wrote: > Dear All > > I wonder if the list has any members with a knowledge of the following > place. 3. Dot Thanks for your thoughts on this issue. I have had a look at the enumerators sheet and it clearly say CHALKS GUTTER. Interestingly on the same page as my WILLIAM GRAY is a lady MARY CHALK who is shown as being a landlord, so it makes me wonder if the the address is named after her family. Many Thanks Pam and Paul Gray Cheshire -----Original Message----- From: eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Dot Gulliver Sent: 06 October 2006 16:06 To: eng-wiltshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] GRAYS from DOWNTON/REDLYNCH Hello Paul I've had a look at the image and there appears to be a small letter after the k in Chalk.
