Hello I wonder if there is some kind Soul out there who can get access to the original Parish Register for Burials for Marlborough, St Mary, to see if this Richard below was a "son of" which would indicate a child's death, or just plain Richard, where it was an probably an adult burial. If it was a child I may be "barking up the wrong tree" with a line I am researching. Happy to do reciprocal research here in Sydney where the Society of Australian Genealogists (SAG) has excellent UK holdings as well as Aussie ones. Regards Jill in Sydney Richard WINKWORTH anywhere during 1629 in National Burial Index (Wiltshire FHS) . 1 results found. 1. Hi Jill! From my transcripts of St. Mary's burials I note 7 WINKEWORTH burials, all between 1615 and 1630. There is just one Richard WINKEWORTH buried 1st March 1615/16. He is shown as son of "Aldam". There is no burial at all recorded on 11 Sep 1629. Hi again Jill and listers! I really shouldn't write my messages so early in the morning. I very much regret having looked at the baptisms by mistake. The burial record for Richard WINKWORTH on 11 Sep 1629 in fact gives no further details. He was almost certainly the Richard (already mentioned) who was baptised 1 March 1615/16, son of "Aldam". The scribe very probably meant to write "Adam" but these things can't be taken for granted. At least my original mistake confirms that Richard was about 14 or 15 years old when he died. Does anyone know where to find a list of Commoners for Malmesbury? eliz

The Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office in Trowbridge holds a privately published list: -- List of Malmesbury Commoners 1600-1886, transcribed and compiled by S. D. Box from the records of the Old Corporation of Malmesbury. (WSRO catalogue reference 921/1/42) I have a photocopy of the introductory pages. Four or five years ago I was also in touch with Oliver Pike, who was at that time a burgess of Malmesbury and was very knowledgeable on the subject of the Old Corporation. His information was invaluable in interpreting what the names, dates and fees in the list actually mean, and he also has access to the original records from which the list was compiled. I don't like to post his address to the forum without his permission, but I can send it to you off-list if you need it. I have a small book on the topic of the Old Corporation as well, and a few photos of the ceremonies on Malmesbury Common. This is all because my great grandfather George WOODWARD (1850-1937) became a commoner in 1873 by virtue of his marriage to the daughter of a commoner, and a "landholder" in 1910. His son was also a commoner, but my father was not eligible since he no longer resided in Malmesbury.
