    3. Yes private baptisms could be due to a child being sickly, and perhaps not expected to live. Private also can mean that they were baptised outside of a normal church service.     2. Also, some of the gentry and aspiring gentry preferred privacy. In the larger parishes, and especially on Christmas Day, there were multiple baptisms done on the same day. It would be unseemly for some of the squirarchy to be having their baptisms viewed by the hoi polloi.
