Regarding private Baptisms, as late as 1920 in Hertford unbaptised babies, should they die, could not be buried in the concentrated graveyard they had to be buried outside the grave yard fence with suicides. This so horrified my Australian born Grandmother that my mother, still going strong at 86, was privately baptised. In the larger parishes, and especially on Christmas Day, there were multiple baptisms done on the same day. It would be unseemly for some of the squirarchy to be having their baptisms viewed by the hoi polloi.
