Surnames: Cook Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EUC.2ACI/3094 Message Board Post: In the 1851 Census for Lambeth, Surrey, Shem Cook, aged 60, Engineer, says that he was born in Bratton, Wiltshire. He is living at home with his spouse Jane , aged 61 years. Now this place of birth was a surprise to me. Does anyone have this Cook family on their radar screen ? Shem is a rather uncommon name.     3. Hi Kathleen, I don't have anything to do with this family, but I happened to have the Westbury 1851 census open on my fiche reader! There is also a Uriah COOK, a 45 yo Ag Lab born in Bratton and Ham COOK a 58 yo blacksmith born in Westbury. How much do you want to bet they were related? There are 55 COOK's in the area, most of them born in Bratton. There's a strong non-conformist population in the area.... that's where the name 'Shem' came from. Let me knw if you want more, I can transcribe the Bratton born COOK's if you like.
