Can I add to this - lots of people have helped. Just one more question. If Edward Hooper was deceased by 1883, would it have said so on his daughter's wedding certificate? It describes her father as Commercial Traveller, but it would appear that he was dead by 1871. Dear Wiltshire List, I have just joined to see if I can get any further with my Uncle's family - he isn't online. His Grandmother was Kate HOOPER, born in Chelsea in 1856. Her parents were Edward HOOPER and Jane COOK. I have found a marriage between an Edward and Jane, in December 1843 in Melksham - registered Trowbridge - on the IGI. I am sending for the certificate, but thought I'd see whether anyone has these people in their tree. Edward was a Bootmaker (Journeyman) in 1856, and a Commercial Traveller in 1883. I imagine he wasn't from Trowbridge, but Jane probably was. Is anyone able to add to any of this? Hopefully, Liz Elizabeth Lane Worthing West Sussex liz_lane@ntlworld.com
Hi Liz, Unfortunately the marriage certificates quite often have nothing about the father being deceased. I have a couple like that and it is quite misleading if you are not aware that they do that. Regards, Dorothy, Canada
Thanks, Dorothy, that's reassuring! Liz At 21:27 07/05/2006, you wrote: >Hi Liz, > >Unfortunately the marriage certificates quite often have nothing about the >father being deceased. I have many marriage certificates and the answer is no it doesnt always say the father is deceased , I have many where I know the father was dead and it still describes the profession . Best wishes Valerie
