    1. [ENG-WIL] 1830 Wiltshire Directory - Phillips
    2. Heather Smith
    3. Hi, Jan Thanks for your email. My William Phillips died in 1845 he left his land to his daughter Hester Phillips who married a George Young the following year. He did have a brother Peter Phillips who was a butcher by trade who lived in the area he could have had land too. I do not know anything about him. They lived in Coldharbour Steeple Ashton. I visited last year but the church was surrounded by scaffolding and we could not go in which was a shame. I searched the churchyard for a stone but most of the stones were unreadable. Both William his wife Sarah Phillips and his daughter Hester Young are buried there. All the best Heather Hello Heather, Forgive me leaping into this thread, but I used to live in Steeple Ashton between 1970 and 1983 and there was a local farmer called John PHILLIPs there then. I don't know whether he/his family would still be there now, or whether it is even of any interest to you, but I just thought it worth saying. I don't know what the name of the farm is/was - in those days it was on the right as you went out of the village, if travelling away from Trowbridge. Hope this helps, Jan White (Glastonbury, Somerset) Hi, Eliz Can you inform me of the christian name of the Phillips you located in Steeple Ashton, please? Thanks Heather He was not in Devizes in the directory, Coldharbour isn't listed and only one example of the name Steeple Ashton. Which may lead to the idea he was a farmer by 1830 and they aren't listed in these directories. Eliz From: "Heather Smith" Hello, Eliz | I would be very grateful if you could check for my William Phillips he appears to have started out as a taylor in Devizes born 1756 in Little Cheverill. William died on 30 December 1844 at Coldharbour Steeple Ashton where he was recorded as a farmer. He also leased the Toll Gate in Coldharbour. Thanks Heather From: "Eliz Hanebury" edhanebury@zoominternet.net I have two new directories, remembering that these are only for the larger towns of the area and only include gentry and trades, I will be happy to do any look up for 1842 and 1830 Wiltshire Eliz
