At his wedding he was described as a Sergeant in the 3rd Regt. of Foot. From another source, I have potentially located a possible fit for William in 1843 - a William Wicks with a Service Number 1461 is serving with the 3rd Regt. of Foot at Punniar during the Gwallior campaign.
