    3. I have been following this list for a couple of months. This is my first listing. I found my 3rd grt grandfather on the 1851 Census. William Tranter born 1795 Stone Mason born Barbany?? Bartany ,Wiltshire. I cannot find this place anywhere in Wiltshire. Can anyone who knows Wiltshire places help me with this. Is the stone mason of any help, or did most villiages have stone masons? 3. I've looked at the census image and it does look like Barbany. I can't find anywhere remotely like it on modern maps or the historical ones on the web. It is possible that it was a hamlet with just a few houses which disappeared or has been absorbed into a larger village. Or even that it was a made up name because William Tranter didn't want anyone to know where he was really from. I suggest you try The local history society in Wiltshire or the county archivist's office. I should imagine that most villages had their own stone mason. 3. Allowing for accents and poor spelling, could it be Patney near Market Lavington? There's quite a few TRANTER's from ML.
