Hi Listers I have recently started on a Family tree for the Osmans of Chiseldon A Richard Osman was baptized on 15 Mar 1738/9 at Chiseldon I have seen his birth accredited to John OSMAN [b1715-1794] & Martha ARMAN [b 1713-1797] and to William OSMAN [b 1704-1788] & Elizabeth WEBB [b 1703-1780] I have referred to the Wiltshire FHS Transcription Disc and find 1738/9 Mar 15 Oseman Richard s John & Martha @ Chiseldon 1738/9 Mar 15 Oseman Richard s William & Elizabeth @ Chiseldon Does anyone know which is correct please-

I too have been researching Osmans. The extract below is from my Osman Story. Generation 1 William Osman The earliest records found to date for the Osman family of Chisledon are those of William Osman who died 1737/38 and his wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name is unknown. Whether the couple were born and/or spent their childhood in Chisledon has not been established but it has been suggested that they had moved to the village by the time of the baptism of their son William in 1704, but no record of William’s baptism has been found as yet. The baptism of two other sons – James and Robert – are recorded in the parish register as having occurred respectively in 1704 and 1711. Whether any other children were been born to William and Elizabeth is not known. Two burial records for Chisledon may be those of William Osman and Elizabeth Osman. The entry for William is written up as William Snr (with the alternative surname of Oseman) for 27th February 1738. That for Elizabeth is for 21st July 1722, and carried the notation ‘w. William’. I have three sons attributed to William and Elizabeth (née) – William (who married Elizabeth Webb), James, and Robert (who married Ruth Parker). Generation 2 William Osman The information for William (Osman or Oseman) has yet to be substantiated. His wife may have been Elizabeth Webb, and if so they married on 17th February 1724 at Chisledon. There is a Chisledon burial record for a William Osman aged 84 for 27th January 1788, which fits neatly with William’s estimated date of birth. Perhaps Richard was a son of William and Elizabeth (née Webb)and a grandson of William and Elizabeth (née ?) Hi Leonie Thanks for your input-we are already in direct communication with the connected Messam Family and i will be getting back to you direct re the Osman side of things I also think John baptised to William on 1st August 1715 and died 1794 was another brother to William James and Robert So whovever the parents of Richard OSMAN 1738 were he would then still have the same Osman Grand-Parents This John i have married to Martha ARMAN [d of Richard ARMAN and Jane] on 27 Oct 1737 at Chiseldon and Richard was Bap 15 Mar 1738--if this Richard is not his it would then appear his first child was Jane some 3/4 years after the marriage-which is not so very likely Also i think Richard could have been named after his Wifes Father and Jane after his Wifes Mother Looking at various old Handwriting Osman and Arman can look very similar-is this another alias like Wooseman?
