    3. Hoping someone can help with this query, any advice would be welcome. My great-grandfather changed his surname by deed poll in late 1800's, in UK. Would such records still exist in Britain and if so where would they be held? My sister lives in UK and would be able to undertake the search. Thanks. Brenda in Canada

    3. You do not say where your ggfather lived but it was common for change of names by deed poll to be published in the London Gazette - at least for south of England I am not sure when the London Gazette started up but it has a wealth on information on official appintments, overseas postings, diplomatic service etc etc Simply Google for London Gazette and then they have search engine and you can search by name and date period It can be painstaking even if the name comes up as you may have to search through many pages /editiosn to find the correct person regards Martin ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Cross" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 04, 2008 5:54 PM Subject: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] deed poll name search > Hoping someone can help with this query, any advice would be welcome. 3. I don't know how successful you will be. I am unable to find or obtain a copy of my own deed-poll from the early 1970's. Most deed-poll records are destroyed after 5 years. 3. I've found records of family name change by Deed Poll in the London Gazette - just google London gazette and the site should come up (that's what woeks for me). The most recent one I found was for the 1970s. Margaret On Tue, Nov 4, 2008 at 7:19 PM, Peter Collins < [email protected]> wrote: > I don't know how successful you will be. Anyone could, and still can*, call themselves what they wanted with no formalities whatsoever. They didn't need to make an announcement in a newspaper or go to the expense of a lawyer and deed poll. If he did go to that trouble, he would have had a copy of the deed himself. If you don't have that, then it's unlikely it still exists. There's a possibility that the lawyer concerned had a copy but you'd need to know who the lawyer was and there's a very good chance that the practice won't have their copy now, if the firm still exists. Your best bet is the London Gazette: www.gazettes-online.co.uk/home.aspx?geotype=London *providing it isn't for illegal reasons!
