    3. Most interesting, One of the Kershaws I found in the FreeBMD being born in Wiltshire (only three Kershaws born in Wilts around 1845) was a Hannah Name: Mary Hannah Kershaw Year of Registration: 1845 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Bradford Upon Avon County: Somerset, Wiltshire Volume: 8 Page: 169 On Wed, Nov 3, 2010 at 2:26 PM, Charani <charani.b@gmail.com> wrote: > Roger S Norris wrote: >> I am attempting to trace a birth and then the subsequent marriage of Annie >> Elizabeth KERSHAW. >> >> In the 1881 census (RG11/3469 Folio 86) Annie Elizabeth Pilling (formerly >> Kershaw) is shown as the wife of >> >> John Pilling and they are living at Werneth, Cheshire. >> >> However, she is shown as being born in Wiltshire at a town I cannot read. >> Her age is given as 35 yrs (born c 1846). > > It looks like Roghton but I can't find such a place in the index I > have or anything even close. > > This seems to be the only possible match, if it's a match at all: > > Marriages Jun 1861 > Kershaw  Hannah          Oldham  8d     927 > Pilling  John            Oldham  8d     927 > > She would only have been about 15 at the time, if she was born around > 1846.  It wouldn't have been illegal but she would have needed her > parents consent though. > > How have you come to the conclusion Annie Elizabeth KERSHAW married > John PILLING? > > Have you considered she might not have married at all or married after > the birth of the children? > >> I am attempting to find the birth of Annie Elizabeth Kershaw in Wiltshire >> and perhaps her marriage c 1872 to John Pilling. > > When Annie was born, the onus was on the registrar to find all the > newborns.  Inevitably, he would have missed some.  The parents were > supposed to register the child if the registrar didn't find them > within 6 weeks/42 days of the birth but with no fine to pay if they > didn't and perhaps believing baptism was registration enough, a good > number of children didn't get registered.  Later the onus changed and > it was the parents responsibility to ensure their children were > registered within the 6 week/42 day period or be fined. > > There's also the possibility the birth was registered but it either > didn't reach the GRO or wasn't included in the index for some reason. >  It might be worth checking with the local register offices to see if > they have the birth. > > -- > Charani (UK) > OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM > Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM > http://wsom-opc.org.uk > http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/ > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-WILTSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Only problem is that she wasn't born in Bradford upon Avon, Wiltshire. She was born in Bradford, Yorkshire! For some reason all the Bradford entries for KERSHAW (and I suspect other surnames as well) have been given the volume number 8 when it should be 23. How it's happened I don't know; it could be an auto completion facility. The images are clear enough. There's someone on GenBrit who knows how to deal with this sort of situation. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/

    3. Sorry for the blank email my pinkies got busy. Is that changing of volume number why all the Kershaws I found were born in Yorkshire? But it was odd, in the 1851 Census sample db there was an Ann Kershaw living Chesire, and one guess as to town.
