    3. Hello Readers, I am attempting to trace a birth and then the subsequent marriage of Annie Elizabeth KERSHAW. In the 1881 census (RG11/3469 Folio 86) Annie Elizabeth Pilling (formerly Kershaw) is shown as the wife of John Pilling and they are living at Werneth, Cheshire. However, she is shown as being born in Wiltshire at a town I cannot read. Her age is given as 35 yrs (born c 1846). Her eldest child on the census is Edith 6yrs born Hyde in Cheshire. In the 1891 census (RG/12/2785, Folio 85) she is shown as being 45 years of age born Swindon, Wiltshire. I am attempting to find the birth of Annie Elizabeth Kershaw in Wiltshire and perhaps her marriage c 1872 to John Pilling. Can you assist me? Many thanks Roger

It looks like Roghton but I can't find such a place in the index I have or anything even close. This seems to be the only possible match, if it's a match at all: Marriages Jun 1861 Kershaw Hannah Oldham 8d 927 Pilling John Oldham 8d 927 She would only have been about 15 at the time, if she was born around 1846. It wouldn't have been illegal but she would have needed her parents consent though. How have you come to the conclusion Annie Elizabeth KERSHAW married John PILLING? Have you considered she might not have married at all or married after the birth of the children? > I am attempting to find the birth of Annie Elizabeth Kershaw in Wiltshire > and perhaps her marriage c 1872 to John Pilling. When Annie was born, the onus was on the registrar to find all the newborns. Inevitably, he would have missed some. The parents were supposed to register the child if the registrar didn't find them within 6 weeks/42 days of the birth but with no fine to pay if they didn't and perhaps believing baptism was registration enough, a good number of children didn't get registered. Later the onus changed and it was the parents responsibility to ensure their children were registered within the 6 week/42 day period or be fined. There's also the possibility the birth was registered but it either didn't reach the GRO or wasn't included in the index for some reason. It might be worth checking with the local register offices to see if they have the birth. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/

    3. Hello Charani, I am very open minded about a "marriage". However, some of the children listed in the census have the second Christian name Kershaw. i.e. Edith 1874, Ellen 1876, Mary 1881, Charlotte 1883 and John 1886. Many thanks Roger. -----Original Message----- From: eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Charani Sent: 03 November 2010 18:27 To: eng-wiltshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Annie Elizabeth Kershaw Roger S Norris wrote: > I am attempting to trace a birth and then the subsequent marriage of Annie > Elizabeth KERSHAW. > > In the 1881 census (RG11/3469 Folio 86) Annie Elizabeth Pilling (formerly > Kershaw) is shown as the wife of > > John Pilling and they are living at Werneth, Cheshire. > > However, she is shown as being born in Wiltshire at a town I cannot read. > Her age is given as 35 yrs (born c 1846). 3. Hello Roger, Yes that is the same family. You may have read my earlier messages. Annie was either married to John Pilling or she regularly made false declarations. She registered the births of her children adding Kershaw as the second Christian name and also showed herself as Pilling formerly Kershaw and gave the father's details as John Pilling. It is the elusive birth I am looking for. Regards Roger. -----Original Message----- From: eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Roger Sent: 04 November 2010 08:23 To: eng-wiltshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Annie Elizabeth Kershaw Hi, There is an Annie KERSLAW PILLING on the 1901 census aged 49, Cheshire HYDE.
