Frances BROOKES (nee PAYNE) was the sister of my great-grandfather, Sydney PAYNE. She was born about 1863 in Temple Cloud, Somerset and married Alfred BROOKES, who was a widower. The marriage of Frances PAYNE and Alfred William BROOKES was registered in Lambeth, Surrey in the March quarter 1901. At the time of the 1901 census, Frances and Alfred BROOKES were living in Easton Royal, near Pewsey, Wiltshire. Frances was 38 and her birthplace was recorded as Somerset, Temple Cloud. Alfred BROOKES was a 50-year-old carpenter, working 'on his own account' at home. His birthplace, like that of his children, was Easton Royal. Children in the household were daughters Elsie (middle initial unclear), 14, Eva M., 10, and 9-year-old son Francis S. (That middle initial should be be an L.) At the time of the 1911 census the BROOKES family was still in Easton Royal. Alfred William BROOKES, 60, was a carpenter and wheelwright. Other family members in the household were Frances BROOKES, 48, Francis Lilburn BROOKES, 19, a carpenter, Ida May BROOKES, 8, and Gwendoline BROOKES, 6. The sixth member of the household was Florence Mary PIPER, aged 20 and single, who was an assistant school mistress at 'C.E. Schools'. She was born in Bristol.
