    1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] GRAYLE

    3. Hello As Josephine Jeremiah has found the GRAYLE name was to be found in Malmesbury well before the introduction of registration in 1837. Frances George GRAYLE, b c 1822 in Malmesbury was my gggf. I have managed to find bits and pieces about his siblings and that his parents were Wiliam GRAYLE b 1796 also Malmesbury born and Mary LEVITT b c 1797 in Chippenham. Beyond either of those I have been able to find nothing. Is anyone able to help with earlier generations especially of the GRAYLEs, please? I would also love to be able to join tigether the GRAYLE name, which morphed into GRAYELL about 1830, with the GRAYELL and even the GRAIL names which also appear in Malmesbury people. Thanks Mike

Hi Mike, I expect that you already know that there is a reference to GRAYELL & WILLIAMS, Malmesbury and Mary GRAYELL, Malmesbury in Pigot's Directory of Wiltshire of 1830, but nothing ventured nothing gained. There's an index to names in Wiltshire beginining with G here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pobjoyoneill/tradedir/wilt1830/wilt1830G.htm Josephine -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

This reference to Chippenham reminded me that I have a little book about this town on my bookshelves. It took me some time to find as I haven't looked at it for a while and it is a quite a slim book of 99 pages. The History of Chippenham A. D. 853-1946 by Arnold Platts M.A. Ph.D. It's undated, but there's a bookseller's note attached to the front endpaper saying that it was published 1946-1947 and that it is a scarce publication of this Wiltshire town. The book is illustrated with six line drawings and one photograph, taken from the air. There are four maps. The first map is of the Wiltshire Hundreds. The second map is of The Borough Lands, 1781 and this one has field names. The third map shows Burgess Houses, Commencement of Nineteenth Century. The fourth map is of Borough of Chippenham showing Boro' Boundaries. I think I bought the book at a PBFA Book Fair in Bradford-on-Avon in 2004. -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com
