    3. Further to my earlier musings I have changed my mind. The Broughton Gifford reference is more than likely correct. It is much closer to Melksham. I have also looked at the Ordnance survey map and the only reference today to Monkton is to Monkton House which is near Broughton Gifford. All these can be found on Wikipedia. Funnily enough Melk is probabably derived from the Old English for milk.
