I am forwarding this on behalf of Richard, a distant cousin; Richard writes: On 9 October 1795 John GREGORY, a baker in Frome, was committed to the Kings Bench Prison in London for a debt of £193 and was still there on 1 January 1797. In July of that year he petitioned for release but as yet I have not been able to find the petition or the record of its outcome. However he had been released by 1 Jan 1801. His creditor was Stephen NOKES, whose name does not appear in the records of St John's Church, Frome. I have not looked in the records of other Frome parishes, nor have I widened my search to other parts of Somerset, or over the border into Wiltshire. Does anyone know who this Stephen NOKES was? In particular I would like to know his occupation and abode. Did he supply flour or suchlike for the bakery, or was this a personal debt unrelated to John GREGORY's occupation? Richard PS, I bear no malice to any descendant of the man who had my 5xg-gf banged up.
