My interest is the ancestor of Richard Rivers who was married three times, the second wife being Joan de Porte (wdw) John Marshall (elder brother of William Marshall Earl of Pembroke) It is possible that he descends from the Vernons of Shipbrook but currently lack definite evidence. John Marshall succeeded to his father's property (Marlborough Castle and adjoining lands Wiltshire) 1166/1167, and subsequently held a number of posts including the appointment of sheriff of York (1189-1190) and sheriff of Sussex (Bosham) 1191-1193, before being killed 1194 defending the castle of Marlborough from forces of the A/B Canterbury. It is possible that Richard Rivers became acquainted with Joan de Porte whilst she was married to John Marshall. Another possibility is that Rivers became acquainted through William Marshall. The thoughts of you genealogical experts would be appreciated. Paul Bulkley
