    1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] BROOKES family, Easton Royal, Pewsey, early 20th century
    2. Frances BROOKES (nee PAYNE) was the sister of my great-grandfather, Sydney PAYNE. She was born about 1863 in Temple Cloud, Somerset and married Alfred BROOKES, who was a widower. The marriage of Frances PAYNE and Alfred William BROOKES was registered in Lambeth, Surrey in the March quarter 1901. At the time of the 1901 census, Frances and Alfred BROOKES were living in Easton Royal, near Pewsey, Wiltshire. Frances was 38 and her birthplace was recorded as Somerset, Temple Cloud. Alfred BROOKES was a 50-year-old carpenter, working 'on his own account' at home. His birthplace, like that of his children, was Easton Royal. Children in the household were daughters Elsie (middle initial unclear), 14, Eva M., 10, and 9-year-old son Francis S. (That middle initial should be be an L.) At the time of the 1911 census the BROOKES family was still in Easton Royal. Alfred William BROOKES, 60, was a carpenter and wheelwright. Other family members in the household were Frances BROOKES, 48, Francis Lilburn BROOKES, 19, a carpenter, Ida May BROOKES, 8, and Gwendoline BROOKES, 6. The sixth member of the household was Florence Mary PIPER, aged 20 and single, who was an assistant school mistress at 'C.E. Schools'. She was born in Bristol. Does anyone have any links with or any further information about this BROOKES family, please? -- Josephine Jeremiah www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com

    1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] DERHAM family, Easton Royal, Pewsey, early 20th century
    2. Josephine Jeremiah
    3. Hello Listers, I am new to the Eng-Wiltshire list, but have been a member of other rootsweb lists for a number of years. I am currently looking at the DERHAM family of Easton Royal, Pewsey, Wiltshire. Sarah Ann DERHAM (nee PAYNE) was the sister of my great-grandfather, Sydney PAYNE. She was born in 1850 in Temple Cloud, Cameley, Somerset. The marriage of Sarah Ann PAYNE and John DERHAM was registered in the June quarter of 1881 in London. I have 1891 census information for this couple, when they were living at Clee St. Margaret, Shropshire and 1901 and 1911 census information for them and their daughter, Elsie, when they were living at Easton Royal, Wiltshire. At the time of the 1901 census, Sarah, 40, John, 44, and their daughter 8-year-old daughter Elsie were living in Easton Royal. Sarah's birthplace was Temple Cloud. John's birthplace was Pimlico, London and his occupation was schoolmaster for a Church of England school. Elsie's birthplace was Bristol, Gloucestershire. The 1911 census shows that the DERHAM family was still in Easton Royal. John DERHAM, 54, was Head Teacher of a County Council Elementary School. No occupation was listed for Sarah Ann DERHAM, 50, while Elsie A. DERHAM, 18, was a milliner. Does anyone have any links with or any further information about this DERHAM family, please? 1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] LEWIS Henry b 1836 Malmesbury England d 1898 Brooklyn New York b 1898 Cleveland Ohio
    2. Eliz Hanebury
    3. Publication: Brooklyn Eagle; Date: Jul 30, 1898; Section: None; Page: 14 The funeral of the late Henry Lewis will take place at Cleveland Ohio today. The interment will be in Lake View Cemetery, that city. Mr Lewis's home was at 869 President st this borough, and the news of his sudden death came as a sorrowful surprise to his many friends in New York City and in other parts of the country. Mr Lewis was born in Malemsburg(sic), Wiltshire England, January 5 1839 and went to Cleveland with his parents in 1844. Here he soon gave evidence of excellent business ability and while yet a young man became a member of the firm of Outhwaite, Shurmer and Co., refiners [my note; his brother George was a silent partner in the firm] after ward Clark, Shurmer and Co, early in the 60's he went to Oil City, Pa to buy oil for his firm from the producers along Oil Creek and from that time til his death on Tuesday he was a prominent figure in the oil business as a buyer and producer. Until the organization of the South Improvement Company in 1872 he was connected with the firm of Clark, Shurmer and Co and when that organization took place and the company disposed of its interest to the Standard Oil Company Mr Lewis connected himself with the latter organization as buyer and shipper. He was one of the organizers of the American Oil Company in Bradford in 1876 which operated widely throughout the oil belt of McKean county with great success. Mr Lewis remained a resident of Oil City until about 1884, when he came to New York to take charge of the shipping department of the Standard Oil Company. During his residence here his life has been marked by many deeds of quiet benevolence. Affable and thoughtful always of the feeling of others, slow to condemn, even of temper those who made his acquaintance grew to love him for his rare qualities. Mr Lewis was married twice. His first wife was Miss Sarah Blackwell, who died in 1883. Of this union four children George H. Lewis, Mrs W. VH. Robinson, Frank b. Lewis and Fred Lewis survive him. In 1888 he was married to Miss Anna V. Dunham of Somerville, N. J. of this union his wife and daughter Dorothy survive him. Mr Lewis was a charter member of the Montauk Club.

    3. Hi Jim, Thanks so much for responding to my query regarding James and Grace ISLEY. Now I am really confused! A few years back, I had someone in Trowbridge researching my Wiltshire ISLEY folks for me and she gave me the following info, and I've always wondered about these facts! Grace Pryer ISLEY died February 1843 - the bell tolled for her on February 25, 1843 and she was buried in St James Churchyard. And then according to James ISLEY's probate document (Jacob ISLEY, his son, was executor) James died on February 24, 1851. Isn't that a strange coincidence? And now you tell me he didn't live to see 1851. Could someone gotten confused over when the parents died? Our local LDS Family History Center here in Ft Myers closed a few years back so I can't order films anymore. I would appreciate any help you can give me and hopefully you will solve my mystery when you get to visit the graveyards. BTW, Simon ISLEY is really SIMEON ISLEY. And there's a few of them, just to drive me insane. There's also several James, William, Jacob, Edward (boatloads of them) and Henry floating around. I never knew there were so many ISLEYs. Your revelation rocks the basis of my ISLEY family tree, but certainly, it's something that needs to be addressed. I've just started looking for another researcher in Wiltshire so now I really have to get cracking with this project. Again, thanks so much for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.
