    3. Hi Leonora, Regarding Wiltshire parishes and their relationship to each other, Nimrod Research at www.*nimrodindex*.co.uk/produce a map that does just that. It is simple, only naming eachparish and giving its boundary. It's produced on an A2 sheet and costs £1.50. I've found it very helpful over the years Good luck Terry Basting in not so frozen Andover On 09/12/2010 17:52, Lenore Hailstone wrote: > Thank you so very much, that was very helpful. Hi Lenore I don't know if I am muddying the waters, but I have done a small amount of research for my son in law's family and they have Hailstones in their family in the 1760s to 1780s in WILCOT which is also in the Pewsey area. 3. Google, http://maps.google.com/ is a good way to visualize the distances and remember sometimes there is no meaningful distance, they may have lived at the corner of several parishes and moving between parents homes LOL English parishes are interesting! and they too moved and changed, I think you need to "Fuzzy Think" when it come to BMD locations. And the Parish Locator is a vital component http://web.onetel.net.uk/~gdlawson/parfind.htm <<Very frequently we discover that our ancestors originate from an area of the British Isles with which we are unfamiliar. If we do not know the names of parishes or churches in the vicinity this can make researching difficult unless we consult reference books. This is where Parish Locator can help you. We have created a database of almost 25,000 parishes and churches throughout England, Scotland and Wales. From the full listing you are able to select a 'Home' parish around which you need to identify other churches. You can enter a distance in either miles or kilometers from the 'Home' parish and request a listing of all such churches from the database within that radius. The listing may be printed or saved to file. This shows the names of the churches within the specified radius along with the County code and National Grid Ordnance Reference. In addition the distance from the 'Home' church and the direction from it are shown. Parish Locator will run on a PC running Windows 95 or above. This new version published in January 2001 has been extended by around 10,000 additional churches and has been enhanced by showing the years between which records are known to exist and included in the Vital Parish Records as cataloged by the LDS. Also new to this version are the facilities to search by a part name or by County or Ordnance Reference number. Full help facilities are included and the program may be uninstalled via Windows Add/Remove Program. This software is Freeware and so may be passed on to anyone provided payment is not charged and all files are included. The program is available either as a compressed Zip file or as a self-expanding executable file. Please click on the appropriate link to download the files which are approx. 6.3mb each. If you need to know the Poor Law Union that a particular parish came under then have a look at Mary Hallett's database at http://www.fourbears.worldonline.co.uk/poorlaw.html>> Eliz On Thu, Dec 9, 2010 at 12:52 PM, Lenore Hailstone <lenhai@charter.net> wrote: > Thank you so very much, that was very helpful.  I am in California and find > lots of England's terms hard to understand, so I am copying this and am sure > it will be very helpful to me.  The information that I have on William is > that he was born either in Hilcott or Bottlesford, (from his obituary), > baptized in Beechingstoke, with his parents living in Pewsey near Wilsford. > I don't know where he was married, I only have his marriage from the England > and Wales marriage index.  It helps to know that these places were at least > close together.  Now I would like to know just how many miles separate them. > I would also like to know about the 1831 census, is it available anywhere > online?  I do belong to Ancestry but not the world one and at this point I > can't sign up for a month of it.  As I said you have been very helpful and I > am very appreciative! > Lenore > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <jojeremiah@dsl.pipex.com> > To: <eng-wiltshire@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2010 6:13 AM > Subject: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Hilcott in North Newnton's History > > > On Thu, 09 Dec 2010 01:02:42 -0000, Lenore Hailstone <lenhai@charter.net> > wrote: > >> My ancestor, William Hailstone is said to be born either in Bottlesford, >> or Hilcott.  I have found Bottlesford, but have not been able to find >> records for Hilcott, or anything else about it, either.  My search >> brings up Pewsey.  Can anyone help me with some information on Hilcott? > > Hi Lenore, > > There is a lot of information about Hilcott on the following web page > about North Newnton's History: > > http://www.pewswan.org.uk/historynn.php > > Josephine > > -- > Josephine Jeremiah > www.ianandjo.dsl.pipex.com > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-WILTSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-WILTSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Hi Lenore, Sharp's Gazetteer of 1852 notes that Hilcott was a tything, in the parish of North Newnton, with a population of 262. Presumably these population figures are based on the 1841 census. The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1874, besides giving the same information above, states that there was a school-house used as a chapel of ease and a Primitive Methodist chapel in Hilcott. 3. Thank you so very much, that was very helpful. I am in California and find lots of England's terms hard to understand, so I am copying this and am sure it will be very helpful to me. The information that I have on William is that he was born either in Hilcott or Bottlesford, (from his obituary), baptized in Beechingstoke, with his parents living in Pewsey near Wilsford. I don't know where he was married, I only have his marriage from the England and Wales marriage index. It helps to know that these places were at least close together. Now I would like to know just how many miles separate them. I would also like to know about the 1831 census, is it available anywhere online? I do belong to Ancestry but not the world one and at this point I can't sign up for a month of it. As I said you have been very helpful and I am very appreciative! 3. Some of my ancestors lived in Hilcott - 1841 and 1851 censuses. They were farmers but the Hilcott is still a very small place, so it was probably a hamlet. I should think that it was too small to have a church, so weddings, funerals and baptisms were probably conducted at a nearby village or town. Bottlesford is nearer than Pewsey but still isn't very big. Google maps shows it as Hilcott, Pewsey, Wiltshire. Unfortunately, I've never looked for any other information on Hilcott. Good luck with your searching. Susan On 09/12/2010 01:02, Lenore Hailstone wrote: > My ancestor, William Hailstone is said to be born either in Bottlesford, or Hilcott. 3. Philip, I have transcribed Brokenborough Bapts and Burials and there are no Wilkins entries at all. There are however a numbe of Wilkins entries at Charlton, which was also a sub church of Malmesbury. Here is your Eliza's Bapt entry at Malmesbury. 1836 Aug-14 WILKINS Eliza dau of Sarah single woman of Malms Workhouse. and this was the only Sarah Wilkins bapt at  Malmesbury 1818 Mar-22 WILKINS Louisa Sarah dau of John Clark & Eliz Salusbury surveyor born 30.9.99 But this bapt was a more likely candidate for your Sarah at Westport 1811 Oct-23 WILKINS Sarah Daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth   Westport Hope this helps.  Jeff ----- Original Message ---- From: Philip Wolverson <philip.wolverson@btinternet.com> To: ENG-WILTSHIRE@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, 7 December, 2010 0:30:56 Subject: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Brokenborough Workhouse 1861 ? 2. Hi Philip If you 'browse' 1861 England census on ancestry.co.uk, rather than search - Enter Wiltshire, Brokenborough, District 6 - you will see the return for the workhouse. The 'inmates' are listed only by initials, not names - this may be why you can't find the people you want by searching. Hope this helps Mike Salamon -----Original Message----- From: eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-wiltshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Philip Wolverson Sent: 07 December 2010 00:31 To: ENG-WILTSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Brokenborough Workhouse 1861 ?
