    1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] PALMER, BODMAN, KNIGHT & BRYANT
    2. David Roberts
    3. Hello List! Like almost every other researcher, I find that every advance raises more questions. That's why we do this stuff! For years I have searched for some of the PALMER family from Chippenham (Langley Burrell & Lacock.) Family legend had it that Thomas (1817) left home due to his mother's re-marriage after his father (John) died. I knew Harriet (1821) came to London as a dressmaker and later as a coffee shop owner. I now find that Thomas, Thirza (1816) and Harriet, are in Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell on the 1841 census, saying that they were not born in the county! One reason why I couldn't find them. Most important of all, Ann PALMER (nee BODMAN) is there aged 55. So on the face of it she didn't re-marry. So what about the wicked step-daddy? I have yet to find her death. Thirza died from scrofula in Percival Street in 1843. The DC has Thomas KNIGHT as being present at the death. I had never heard of him. He is described as an uncle on one of the census returns. This led me to look for KNIGHT in Langley Burrell. There are very many, to say the least! Which one was the relevant one, I am unsure, since ages on the census returns are inaccurate. There is a Thomas KNIGHT who married Ann BRYANT in 1839. Could they have decided to move to London with the PALMERs. And there are BRYANTs on the relevant 1841 census pages. My query: Is anyone researching KNIGHT of Langley Burrell? I need to know what the link is between PALMER and KNIGHT. Finding the death of Ann Palmer will be another major step, since it will show who was present at the death. There are many Ann PALMERs to choose from. Any information most gladly welcomed. 3. I did a quick search for Wm K?dd?l* on Ancestry and no one matched in 1841 or 51, I am pasting the closest ones (age wise there weren't any Thomases) I always search England without county so I get any ships lists, then I go back and try with county and got no hits in the census. From what I see Somerset is much more likely. 1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] ANN MARTIN
    2. I have been seeking the birth/bap of my gg/gm. On various cencus returns she claims to have been born in Berwick St John, father JAMES MARTIN. ANN MARTIN married JOHN WILTSHIRE LONG in Shrewton in 1848 her place of abode was given as Winterbourn Dauntsey, a servant. In the 1851 Census the couple are in Shrewton and have a visitor LYDIA MARTIN of Berwick St John. There was a JAMES MARTIN living in Berwick with a large family but no ANN. Please, can anyone help me on this problem, I have been searching for such a long time. Vera Lennard g3vps@tinyworld.co.uk

    1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Richard Rivers (d.1222)
    2. paul bulkley
    3. My interest is the ancestor of Richard Rivers who was married three times, the second wife being Joan de Porte (wdw) John Marshall (elder brother of William Marshall Earl of Pembroke) It is possible that he descends from the Vernons of Shipbrook but currently lack definite evidence. John Marshall succeeded to his father's property (Marlborough Castle and adjoining lands Wiltshire) 1166/1167, and subsequently held a number of posts including the appointment of sheriff of York (1189-1190) and sheriff of Sussex (Bosham) 1191-1193, before being killed 1194 defending the castle of Marlborough from forces of the A/B Canterbury. It is possible that Richard Rivers became acquainted with Joan de Porte whilst she was married to John Marshall. Another possibility is that Rivers became acquainted through William Marshall. The thoughts of you genealogical experts would be appreciated. Paul Bulkley

    1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Looking for Stephen NOKES
    2. Dorothy Spence
    3. I am forwarding this on behalf of Richard, a distant cousin; Richard writes: On 9 October 1795 John GREGORY, a baker in Frome, was committed to the Kings Bench Prison in London for a debt of £193 and was still there on 1 January 1797. In July of that year he petitioned for release but as yet I have not been able to find the petition or the record of its outcome. However he had been released by 1 Jan 1801. His creditor was Stephen NOKES, whose name does not appear in the records of St John's Church, Frome. I have not looked in the records of other Frome parishes, nor have I widened my search to other parts of Somerset, or over the border into Wiltshire. Does anyone know who this Stephen NOKES was? In particular I would like to know his occupation and abode. Did he supply flour or suchlike for the bakery, or was this a personal debt unrelated to John GREGORY's occupation? Richard PS, I bear no malice to any descendant of the man who had my 5xg-gf banged up.

    1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] The Spelt Family - where did they all go ?
    2. Francis Payne
    3. Is anyone interested in the SPELT family who were quite prolific and prominent in counties such as Hants, Sussex, Wilts from the 1500s to late 1800s.  Curiously, the name has disappeared completely from UK with not a single Spelt birth (even with Spelt the mother's maiden name) or marriage in almost 100 yrs. 3. Hi Linda There were Gale's in Kington St Michael and Box both in Wiltshire. I have the baptism records for both places but cant identify your Joseph. Very recently I have discovered that my line of the Gale family has probably originated in Wiltshire and more specifically in Chippenham. The Joseph Gale in which I am interseted was married in Lewisham, Kent in 1805. The marriage record in the register is anotated with 'born Chippenham'. It is likely that he was born from about 1755 to 1787 allowing his age to be anything from 18 to 50 when he married. I bought the microfiche from the FHS and have discovered about 4 possible Joseph Gale's christened in the period 1773 to 1783. I wonder if anyone has researched any of these Gale families and have any suggestiond which family my Joseph belonged to. Any suggestions?
