    3. The home of my Cogans! <VBG> About Yeoman or Yeomen from wikipedia Yeoman could refer to a free man holding a small landed estate, a minor landowner, a small prosperous farmer (especially from the Elizabethan era to the 17th century), a deputy, assistant, journeyman, or a loyal or faithful servant. Work "performed or rendered in a loyal, valiant, useful, or workmanlike manner", especially work requiring a great deal of effort or labor, such as would be done by a yeoman farmer, came to be described as "yeoman's work".[1] Thus yeomen became associated with hard toil.[2] You also need to know this URL http://www.wiltshirebmd.org.uk/ Wiltshire Death indexes for the years: 1853 Surname Forename(s) Age Sub-District Registers At Reference LEE George 55 Malmesbury West History Centre MW/5/278 Very Very good for the Malmesbury Brokenborough area. 3. Mike, Thanks from the input. I know quite a bit after the Moss family came to the US but little of their life in England and nothing of the Malmesbury, Wiltshire area. Something I'd like to ask the list, Thomas Moss is listed as a Yeoman in the 1841 census. What would that be? 3. Eliz, Thomas, Eliza and at least four of their children went to a Cayuga County New York. Thomas and Eliza died in the small town of Moravia. Their sons Edgar, William and Frederick all enlisted in the Union army during the American Civil War. Edgar died in a prison camp in Charleston SC, William died in the Andersonville GA prison camp and Frederick suffered from dysentery after being in a prison camp and later suffered a head wound. Interestingly Frederick did die in Cleveland in 1893. 3. Hi Adrian, It is "Fanny Watte" in Findmypast. I have deciphered some of the "Occupation" field as "Cook, Housemaid." I can't work out the other word. I think the place of birth could be something like "Pewsxxx" or "Lewsxxx". Possibly Pewsey although there is a "Lewes" in Wiltshire. I have edited the original census to make it a bit clearer, I can send if you like but it's still difficult to read. Jeannemarine. 3. Hi Adrian, The copies I have are titled The North Wilts Directory and Year Book For 1920 46th Year of Publication Published by the North Wilts Herald, Bath Road, Swindon and The Swindon & District Directory and Year Book For 1928 54th Year of Publication Published by the Swindon Press Ltd, 100 Victoria Road which always was, & maybe still is, the address of the local paper although I'm not too worried about where the information comes from. I assume there are Post Office, Pigots and Kelly's directories for around the same period. I just wondered if anyone happened to have a copy of any of them for the period 1920 to 1928. I seem to remember my mother saying they lived for a time in a house north of the railway line before moving to Pembroke Street. There is a G.W.Bryant shopkeeper living at 38 Jennings St in 1920 which would fit the bill, except that my grandfather wasn't a shopkeeper - he was a railway signalman. 3. Mike, I am definitely talking about Street Directories, not Trade Directories, although I agree these Street Directories usually contain a section we would now call Yellow Pages. The Street Directories in the UK list every house by street & house number giving the head of each household. They do not usually mention the occupation, but in some cases they do, particularly when a trade such as shopkeeping is carried out on the premises. As I mentioned, I have the Street Directories for 1920 & 1928 & my grandfather appears in the 1928 (and in the subsequent directories I have) as being resident at 33 Pembroke Street & like other people in the street has no occupation against the entry. 1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Swindon street directories 1920 - 1928

    3. Does anyone have access to the street directories as above. I'm trying to find when my grandfather G.W.Bryant & his family moved to 33, Pembroke Street. He moved to Swindon sometime after my mother was born in 1917 and he was in Pembroke Street in 1928. I'm hoping the directories between 1920 & 1928 only show one G.W. Bryant either at one or the other of these addresses. Thanks in advance Geoff Morse

I have possibly located her in the 1871 census in Christchurch but I can not read much of the entry; in particular her place of birth. The reference is RG10 Piece 1176 folio 115 and page 26. Can anyone help decipher the entry, please? Adrian Yorkshire

Although not a lot of Wilts connection on site, there are some and if you put Wilts into the search facility all connections will come up. Link below, if it fails Google Yesterdays Journey. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm
