    1. Re: [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Where is Monkton near Milksham?
    2. TADD HARRY
    3. Further to my earlier musings I have changed my mind. The Broughton Gifford reference is more than likely correct. It is much closer to Melksham. I have also looked at the Ordnance survey map and the only reference today to Monkton is to Monkton House which is near Broughton Gifford. All these can be found on Wikipedia. Funnily enough Melk is probabably derived from the Old English for milk. 1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] FOOT(E) Berwick St John etc
    2. Robert Webb
    3. Hi I have tried two or three years ago to follow my FOOT(E) line back but without success – so giving it another try! Samuel (1)Foote, my great great grandfather, was born in 1801 at Berwick St John and married Frances White at Wilton in 1825 and their children were – Fanny b. 1828, Charles b 1831, Maria & Mary b. 1834, Charlotte b. 1838 all in Compton Chamberlayne and Robert b. 1804 in Seend. Samuel(1) parents were Joseph(1) and Catherine (Dibben, Dybben); he was born in Berwick St John and they married in 1785 at Gussage St Michael. Their other children were – Henry b. 1786, William b. 1788, Sarah b. 1790, Thomas b. 1792, John b. 1793, Joseph b. 1798, Robert b. 1804 – all in Berwick St John. The birth of Joseph(1) is not known but thought to be circa 1760 although it is possible that they might have been Joseph and Sarah (Brewer) of Sixpenny Handley. There were two Foot(e) families in the very small village of Berwick St John at that time ie Robert and Fortune Foot; Fortune also had strong links with Gussage St Michael. However research believes that both were linked in some way to each other even though Robert was the well off side! We are keen to confirm Joseph(1) family and antecedents and welcome any possible connections or information that might help either by name othe villages of Berwick St John, Compton Chamberlyne, Gussage St Michael, Seend or Sixpenny Handley. 3. A little update, if you look on Ancestry at the census for all years (1841 - 1901) and use the following search terms.......... Name: James Smith Lived In: Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire you should get results for 1841 & 1851. The 1841 in particular may be interesting because it looks as if the 'Place' is Monkton! 1. [ENG-WILTSHIRE] Elizabeth & Thomas MARTIN - DEVIZES
    2. Florence & Tom
    3. ADVICE PLEASE I have the following information, and I would like some experienced opinions please. In NEW ZEALAND. My Great Grandfather THOMAS COOK MARTIN was in Christchurch New Zealand, aged 15 in 1857. I have no information about his origin prior to 1857. (Intention to Marry Certificate) WILLIAM HEAD age 34, ELIZABETH HEAD age 31, and THOMAS HEAD age 14, arrived at Lyttelton New Zealand aboard the Ship Egmont in December 1856. (Shipping List, and Lyttelton Times. ) Elizabeth Head nee MARTIN died in Christchurch in 1861. (Death certificate.) Thomas Cook MARTIN married Emily Ellen Stevens in Christchurch in February 1862. A William J HEAD was a witness at this wedding. (Wedding Certificate) A Jane DEW was a sponsor at the baptism of Alfred Thomas Charles Martin, the first child of Thomas and Emily Martin. 10 January (1864 (Register SMC2 1010B) William James HEAD married Jane DEW in 1866. (NZBDMs online) Thomas Cook MARTIN was a sponsor at the baptism of William Frederick HEAD, first child of William James & Jane (late DEW nee KITE) HEAD, 3 March 1867 (St Michaels Church Baptism, no. 1669) A William James HEAD age 77 died at Greenpark New Zealand in 1897. Marriage 1 England, Elizabeth MARTIN, NO ISSUE. Marriage 2 Christchurch, Jane Kite (DEW), issue 4 males and 3 females. Born Portsmouth England. (Death Certificate.) I cannot locate a marriage, a death or any other information about THOMAS HEAD after his arrival at Lyttelton in 1856. In WILTSHIRE ENGLAND. An Elizabeth MARTIN was born in Bridport, Dorset in 1825. Father John Martin, mother Sarah. (Family Search) An Elizabeth MARTIN age 18? living in St John Devizes with her family, parents John and Sarah. (1841 Census.) A THOMAS ? was born in St John Devezis in 1842 to an Elizabeth MARTIN no father listed. (Ancestry.) (Birth certificate.) An Elizabeth MARTIN age 26, born Bridport Dorset is living at 154 Newpark Street, St Mary Devizes with her same family, parents John and Sarah. No Thomas listed ?? (1851 Census) A THOMAS COOK age 8?, a LODGER is living at 170 Newpark Street St Marys Devizes with Mary Smart age 27, and another Mary Smart age 3 months. (1851 Census.) (I cannot find a relevant Thomas Martin in the 1851 census ??) A William James HEAD was born in St Thomas Portsmouth Hampshire September 1820, parents Wm Head and Mary. (Family Search) A William HEAD age 30 is living at Headington Wiltshire with his family, parents William and Mary Head. (1851 Census) A William HEAD a BACHELOR, married an Elizabeth MARTIN a SPINSTER in St Mary Devizes in 1853. (FreeBMD) (Marriage Certificate) Possibly the THOMAS who was born to Elizabeth Martin in Devizes in 1842, came to New Zealand in 1856, as Thomas HEAD, age 14. Maybe his unknown father was a COOK ?? Maybe he is the Thomas Cook living as a Lodger in the same street as Elizabeth in 1851 ?? As I have not found a relevant Thomas MARTIN, I now believe the Thomas HEAD who came to New Zealand with his mother Elizabeth, and his step father William Head, is indeed my Great Grandfather, THOMAS COOK MARTIN. Any thoughts about the above information would be appreciated, Thank you, Tom. Thomas P Martin Sale Victoria Australia.

    3. Thank you to everyone who has answered my questions. I have names to contact and the schedule of St. Mary's. We are all set to go! Looking forward to our visit. It may be far better to call the churchwarden or vicar direct, their details are The Vicar, the Revd Julian Parker 01225 752635 Churchwarden: David Little 01380 870788 This information has been obtained by visiting the Steeple Ashton Community website (via Google) http://www.2sa.co.uk/church%20groups%20html.html Are you aware that there is a Silverthorne Family Association that has links to this area and this parish in particular; I suspect your family name spelling of Silverthorn is a variant of Silverthorne.
