Hi Ruth, 'The Rookery' in Ramsbury is known these days as 'Parliament Piece'. After Ramsbury Manor, It is probably one of the most important houses in Ramsbury. To see what it looks like go http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=ramsbury or just do a Ramsbury search on eBay and there eight photographs of the house. Imposing, isn't it? The search also lists for sale an excellent book on the history of Ramsbury by Barbara Croucher which has another photo of Parliament Piece. I'm not suggesting you buy the book but if you can borrow one through a library loan scheme, there are several references to members of the Batson family but sadly no photographs. Again, if you go to http://www.oodwooc.co.uk/ph_rams_mem1.htm you will find photographs of two memorials to members of the Batson family. Sadly, one of them is very indistinct. Hi Eliz, May I trouble you to see if there are any entries for any Stent's in the 1839 Warminster directory please? Many thanks, Dorothy
Hi, l am trying to find a listing in a trade directory from the mid 1830's for my GILES family in Warminster, would anyone know of an on-line site where l could access the info? if not if anyone has access to such a directory would they very kindly look to see if there is a listing for the above? Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated. Kind Regards Robert
Hello Valerie Thank you very much for the info off the 1851 census. I aready had a Jacob married to a Sarah with a daughter Rachel but that is all I knew, nothing more. I think Jacob must be a brother to my William as he appears to be born within a year or two of William. Also William had a child in 1846 and called him Jacob, brother to my gt grandmother. This now gives me much more info, Once again thank you for taking the time to look this up for me. BFN JEnny Mische

It is useful to me as a process of elimination because I now doubt whether Joseph Barnes living at The Shambles in Chippenham (1841) is mine. Do you have further census info on him and does he continue in the Shoe trade? The Joseph Barnes on my tree, having married in Chippenham in 1842, becomes a Beer Seller by the time of the 1871 census. Unfortunately, I cannot find him in 1861 but in the 1851 census I think he is a Labourer living with his family in West Ham.

Hi Pat, you'd almost certainly be looking at Bushton Wilts. It's 1 mile from Clyffe Pypard, near Wootten Bassett. I had a quick look in the 1881 census, and there IS a family of Barrett's with children born in Bushton, but their William is too young, at 8. There are a few Williams of the right age born in nearby Aldbourn (or Aldbourne) and Stratton St Margaret though. Kind regards, and happy hunting!
